BBQ spare ribs

When you don't have any BBQ sauce this recipe is good for a homemade evening BBQ rib meal anyway. The cooking method utilized is brown and then bake, one of many ways to make ribs in the oven.

  • 1/2 C ketchup

  • 1/4 C water

  • 1/8 to 1/4 C red wine vinegar

  • dash of worchestershire sauce

  • salt

  • pepper

  • rack of spare ribs

1. Rinse the ribs and cut them into either individual ribs or several rib slabs. The ribs are being cut to make them manageable in the oven method to be used. Full sized racks may not fit in the cooking equipment to be used.

2. Combine the ketchup, water, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Stir the ingredients together. Set the sauce aside.

3. Preheat the oven to 375.

4. In a large skillet brown the ribs in not too much oil over high heat. Browning the ribs means that the surface of the meat is seared. Browned meat will appear grey, with some darker browning on the skin of the meat.

5. Put the ribs in a casserole dish and pour the sauce over the ribs.

6. Cover the baking dish with a lid or foil and bake for 45 minutes. If you don't, it is more likely to scorch before done, which doesn't taste nice. At 45 minutes cut a rib to the bone in the meatiest thickest area. If the juices run clear then the ribs are done. If the juices are pink tinged with blood and the flesh still too pink, cook the ribs longer until testing shows the meat to be fully cooked.
