sugar cookies

If you really like sweets you'll like these. Small children will delight in them like hummingbirds in nectar. Older children and adults without a sweet tooth likely will find them sickening sweet.

  • 1 C sugar

  • 1 C powdered sugar

  • 1 C butter or margarine

  • 1 C vegetable oil

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 5 C sifted flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp cream of tartar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

1. Preheat the oven to 350.

2. Cream together the sugars and butter or margarine. Soften the butter or margarine in the microwave first.

3. Add all of the remaining ingredients and mix well. Sifted flour means unpacked flour. If a sifter is available, sift the flour. If not, fluff the flour with a fork when measuring out ingredients. Don't pack the flour down when measuring it.

4. Roll the cookie dough into balls the size of small walnuts. Place them 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Line the cookie sheet if desired. For shaped sugar cookies roll all the dough out with a floured rolling pin on a flat lightly floured surface. Using cookie cutters, cut out cookies from the dough. Place decorations and sugar on them as desired. You can make cookie cutters out of aluminum foil or use the tops of cups for round shapes.

5. Press the cookies with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar. Sprinkle granulated sugar generously on top. Sugar crystals of any color may be used.

6. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove and set to cool on a rack.
