sorry charlie tuna casserole

tuna casserole in baking dish

This is a personal favorite, really like this one. Sorry Charlie tuna casserole gets its name from the Starkist company's cartoon mascot Charlie the Tuna. The Charlie the Tuna advertisement was the originator of the catchphrase "Sorry Charlie" which was popular in part of the 20th century.

The phrase referred to a well known series of tv ads in which the tuna was unable to hook himself on a fishing hook, always being refused with a note attached to the hook which said "Sorry Charlie". Here's a link to an ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Wy_BRFElc

I only used half a can of the fried onions in the pic, I usually use a whole can.

  • 8 oz wide noodles

  • 1 can tuna

  • 1 (3 1/2 oz) can French Fried Onions

  • 1 (6 oz) can sliced water chestnuts

  • 1/2 pint sour cream

  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup

1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease a casserole dish.

2. Bring water in a medium pot to a boil over medium-high heat. Add noodles. Cook until done according to instructions on packaging.

3. Drain the tuna. In a large bowl combine the noodles, tuna, sliced water chestnuts, sour cream, and cream of mushroom soup. At this point you can also add about half the French onions if desired. If you don't you may want to season the finished dish with salt as desired on serving.

4. Pour the tuna mixture into the casserole dish. Top with the remaining French onions.

5. Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil cover and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
