The 5 stages of mystic conscioussness are: 1. awakening or conversion, 2. self-knowledge or purgation, 3. illumination (or enlightenment, presence, transcendence, reality) 4. surrender (or dark night), 5. union (p203) The consciousness of transcendence depends on a complete humility. (p519) (Mysticism by Underhill)

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (IS 55:8-9 NIV)

Consciousness and the mind are non-physicals that TRANSCENDS the physical - somehow develops from physical processes. (Common Sense, p127)

There are quite a few ways to transcend ourselves, but the two main ways are the humility-way and the awareness-way. (http://www.yogaofsrichinmoy.com)

Through love and peaceful living, one gains the highest knowledge. The heart becomes pure, and the mind has unlimited potential for receiving and retaining education in any field of learning. The Educator has fertile ground in the mind of the student, for each understands the greater potential, and each understands and comprehends the more complex thoughts and ideas. Higher consciousness, beauty and refinement, are results of this great potential. Due to direct understanding of Dharma, one lives in the awareness of “cause and effect” or the knowledge of self-affirmation. This leads one to living the principles of personal duty, understanding equality, and transcending false ideas of limitation and prejudice of religion, race, gender, or caste. Inherent in the nature of humans is the desire to improve and better ourselves. This process of going beyond our current limitations is often referred to as “self transcendence.” However at the heart of self transcendence is a spiritual concept that we are growing into a more illumining nature and gaining a wider perspective of our true self. Spiritual seekers have experienced self transcendence as the grace that allows them to be aware of the infinite consciousness of inner delight. In this spiritual self transcendence the different religions and spiritual practises converge on the common teaching of going beyond the limitations of the ego and being aware of our higher Source. Self transcendence is a personal journey of self discovery. To practise self transcendence we need personal effort, willingness to change. However self transcendence needs to involve an awareness that our success doesn’t just involve our “little I”, but also the universal self (or bigger “I”). (http://www.selftranscendence.org)

Transcendence does not apply only to God in his ultimate transcendence. The quality of being objectively real yet beyond immediate sensory experience applies to all human values and institutions. It could be described as the quality of any whole that is larger than the sum of its parts.

St John of the Cross said "In order to overcome our desires and to deny ourselves in all things, requires a greater love." Unifying all his energies about a new and higher center of life is transcendence: attainingment of a higher order of reality. (Mysticism, p245)

The created world has no existance apart from God. God is not a transcendent being who occupies an alternative sphere of reality. (History of God, p339)

Revelation occurs step by step, because our consciousness unfolds within the framework of evolution. Original sin is not a fall, rather a shift out (transistion, unfolding, awakening) of the state of instinct into the knowledge of good and evil. The real sin is that in the process of becoming the person gets separated from God. (p44) Contemplation is about a process of transformation (by way of purification, dying, emptying, and letting go). The redemptive process in us aims at a process of becoming Christ like or fully human, indeed of becoming God. (p132-3) Greet death as the great transformer. Without death there is no new life. Those who object to death object to the resurrection and ultimately to God. The cosmic law of transformation is life-death-resurrection. (p202) The Divine sleeps in every person like a seed which needs to develop, awaken, or unfold. Jesus came to cure us of the false notion that we live separated from God. We have to let the Divine come into us, to give it space. Only love has the power to accomplish dying of our superficial ego and leave everything to enter into a new order of being. Transformation to the next level is through what Jesus called conversion or rebirth. If we accept the purification process, it leads to a breakthrough to a new level of consciousness. False self-images and expectations of life can be corrected by transcending the ego. On his new level it's possible to develp a global spirituality that is not institutionalized. (p264-5) (Meaning)

If one succeeds through effort of thinking, it may be after a very long period where the mind has been stretched to its furthest limits, then gives up. When it does give up it lets go of everything and the person spontaneously 'transcends'. Concentration plays no part in TM because to focus, to bring together, is to become one‑pointed. (TM, p42)

The 4th state of consciousness is the transcendental state (Sleep, Awake, Waking, TM)

In TM the intensity of mental activity is reduced until,

disappearing completely, only the unchanging screen of pure awareness is left. The object of experience and the subject of experience have become the same. The Self has become aware of the Self. When there is no longer any distinction between object and subject and no longer any interaction, then experience as we normally know it ceases. That is why it seems to be one of emptiness. Only in separation is there duality. Beholder is one with behold. Where there is duality there is conflict. In the transcendental state the observer and the observed become one. There is no longer duality, there's bliss. The thinker and the thought are one. (TM, p94)

Going beyond the distinction between self and cat (killed by the Buddha) and the opposition of clean and dirty, he was looking at everything from the standpoint of eternal life. (Zen & Bible, p177)

Transcend matter to see God's presence.

Paradox that the more evident the transcendent is in itself, the less understandable it is to our functional or inferior intellect. (Dark Night, p192)

We can transcend by not comparing ourselves to others (relativity), but to the absolute. God transcends because there is unity in the diversity like with the Tao where both yin and yang complement each other. Some examples, for the best results there must be both quality and quantity, not one or the other. Binary numbers is a complete system since it can represent any number by combinations of zeros and ones. And the various cycles of life complete themselves as they go from one extreme to the other and back again forming one continuous circle. Wisdom as having both love (powerlessness) and knowledge (power). Synthesis is the opposite of analsis, which combines thesis and antithesis, produces a new creation. Integration combines differences, which must be identified first? Or like creationists and evolutionist both being correct or like science and religion being able to co-exist. I wonder: is the Trinity also an example of Tao, where Father (old, OT, Moses, obedience) and Son (new, NT, Jesus, grace) are one and the same in Spirit and where each fulfills the other? Life is bittersweet having both suffering and joy. Are people higher (more complete) than the angels because they experience both flesh (evil) and spirit (good)? And Earth which lies between heaven and hell? Physical example of transcendence may be like going from the valley to the mountain view to the sky view. (Randy, 3/8/97)

Love has inspired masterpieces in poetry, music, and art, yet still transcends our ability to explain. Love is more than the sum of its parts. Expressing love takes us out of our limited egos with no thoughts of returns. We soar above earthbound individuality, perceiving our part in the larger pattern. Like an aerial view of our favorite city, love lifts us up to discover a wondrous symmetry. New patterns of harmony emerge as we see how all life connects. The power of love lets us expand our consciousness, where our self expands to include the world around us, all apparent discord and duality resolving into greater harmony. (Tao Peace, p202-4)

In our wake state we are awake yet ignorant of your true nature, your God self within. We identify ourselves with our ego, mind, and body and have not realized that we are much greater than these. With the practice of mediation, we can experience a state of transcendential consciousness where we awaken to the impersonal God and where we begin to identify with inner wholeness rather than with our limited ego. (Divine Rev, p80)

By alternating deep silence with dynamic, eventually your mind becomes so saturated with transcendental consciousness that it "sticks" even when you are fully active (like cloth-dyeing). By spending a few minutes in communion with God every day and then confronting the day's activity, God consciousness can eventually be fully established. Like being plugged into a divine socket, you are continually being replenished with energy, love, hapiness, peace, and create inspiration. Your destiny is to realize God and to live heaven right here on earth. "The soul is not like God: she is identical with him. (Meister Eckhart)" (Divine Rev, p83-84)

The created world has no existence apart from God, its vital force. It is only becuase of our limited perceptions that it apppears to exist separately, but this is an illusion. God, therefore, is not really a transcendent being who occupies an alternative sphere of reality; he is not external to the world. Indeed, the doctrine of God's transcendence is another illusion of our minds, which find it almost impossible to get beyond sense impressions. (Hist, p339)

I normally think of trandscending as going beyond, but could it be more like integating duality? Like integrating man and God? Like realizing self / spirit and Self / Spirit? (Randy, 12/21/08)
