The self must be purged of all that stands between it and goodness: putting on the character of reality instead of illusion or sin. Love opens the inner eye of the soul to see this truth, then beginning with the soul being really humble - thou will know Me. The bitter knowledge of self as ugly, wrong, imperfect and the break-up of illusion old universe can the will of man readjust. (p241-5) Detachment and purity go hand in hand, for purity is but detachment of the heart. God dwells nowhere but in a pure soul. (p248) (Mysticism)

Purification of traditional Christianity has subtly added to our burden of guilt and made God a punisher, whereas a purification of dogma reveals God as a lover. (Miracles Intro, p6)

According to John of the Cross, Jesus redeemed the world by emptying himself on the cross. Thereby the truly spiritual man may understand the mystery of the gate (?) and the way of Christ in order to be united with God. (T)(Meaning, p133)

Don't strive to see the Eternal Spirit with your eyes but to endeavor to feel him in your hearts and by purity of soul to render themselves worthy of his favors. You shall attain to supreme happiness, not only in purifying yourselves, but also in guiding others in the way that shall permit them to gain orignal perfection. (Lost Years, p226)

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. (Matt 5:8)

The inflowing of the divine light into our souls is a ray of darkness according to John of the Cross. We see light in a dark room because of the dust that is there. If there were no dust, the ray of light would go right through the room without being observed. This is a symbol of the full development of contemplative prayer, which is so pure that it is not perceptible to the one receiving it. They may not have much awareness of God's inflowing graces, but the Holy Spirit is the inspiration or motivation of all they do. (Open Mind, p106-7)

Those being purified are suspended between heaven and earth: they no longer find any satisfaction in everyday joys, while the joy that the experience of enlightenment brings is still denied them. This is the abandonment by God and the only thing one can do is to be still and be open in contemplation to the vision of their naked being and to the power that is purifying them. When the process of purification is completed, then intellect, memory, will, and senses function free of the ego's self-centered contraction. (Contemplation, p56-57)

God's love for us fully purifies our heart and unites us perfectly with God's will. Divine love makes us God by participation, enables us to experience God in this life through faith, and after death to see God and live forever in God's presence. (Purif, p29)

Not giving into the smallest of vices is what really purifies us. Also he who doesn't give into the small things won't give into the large ones. Purity is like gold (which is tried with fire and does not rust). (Randy)

But the criterion of PURITY of love is the absence of self. The conquest of self is the most valuable of all attainments. God made sexuality very powerful so that it would generate intense dramas among the human beings in whom his curiosity is infinite, so that it would be a powerful force for good, and so that it would be a worthy and honourable rival to the non-sexual love He offers to mankind as the exemplar of all loves. (Quest, p59)

Let one therefore keep the mind pure, for what a man thinks, that he becomes. (Wisdom, Hinduism, p20)
