On the cross, Jesus said "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Ps 22)" (Mark 15:34) Jesus entered into the Hell of separation from God. The Father abandoned him because Jesus took upon himself the penalty for our sins. In that excruciating moment, he experienced something far more horrible than physical pain. The beloved Son of God knew what it was like to be rejected by the Father. As we read in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (NIV). (http://www.markdroberts.com/?p=420)
To love God with all your heart and soul and might is to abandon yourself to Him. (Further, p162)
The path has to go by way of total abandonment of all my thoughts and images and wishes before it can ripen into a path of becoming one with the God-man. (Meaning, p300)
When we think of "the other shore" we may think that it is completely different from this shore, that to reach it we have to abandon this shore completely. The other shore is this very shore. Teaching of "non" is only a finger pointing to the moon. It is not the moon itself. (Buddha, Christ, p142)
The feeling of being abandoned by God is not pleasant, but it does pass provided we imitate Christ and abandon ourselves to the Mystery. (Dark Night, p62)
It is not enough to succeed in forgetting creatures and all that has to do with them; the ego must abandon even itself. Even the heart's longing for God is an obstacle. Avoid all compulsion and learn to love joyfully. Wait with gracious and modest courtesy for the Lord's initiative and do not impatiently snatch at grace like a greedy greyhound suffering from starvation. (Contemplation, p26-27)
That utter abandonment to the sovereign will of the Lord is what He wants of His people, even when circumstances seem to swirl out of control. (Sense, p114)
