In mythology the gods feared androgynous humans becoming like them so they split humans beings into halves - male and female. As half creatures, we were no longer capable of competing with the gods, yet we were left feeling incomplete and yearning for our lost wholeness, hoping that in the moment of sexual union we might re-experience the loss bliss of our near godlike totality. (p220) However, we are disappointed if we look for our spouse to meet all of our needs, to fulfill us, to bring us a lasting Heaven on earth. Just as hunger has a legitimate purpose, so the sexual instrinct has been implanted by Nature solely for the propagation of the species, not for the kindling of insatiable longings. Destroy wrong desires now, otherwise they will remain with you after the astral body has been separated from its physical casing. Even when the flesh is weak, the mind should be constantly resistant. If temptation assails you with cruel force, overcome it by impersonal analysis and indomitable will. Every natural passion can be mastered. Materialism and the forceful, activating impulse of wrond desire is the greatest enemy to the happiness of man. Is true holiness and enlightenment achieved through denial of the sexual energy? Of course sex is okay, but don't use it for power, or hidden pupose, or for ego gratification or domination. Nothing holy has ever been achieved through denial (see DENIAL). Sex is joy and sex is sacred too, but many of you think joy and sacredness do not mix, when in fact, they are the same thing. You have shamed sex calling it evil and wicked rather than the highest gift and the greatest pleasure. The energy which underscores sex is the energy which underscores life; which is life! The feeling of attraction and the intense and often urgent desire to move toward each other, to become one, is the essential dynamic of all that lives. (Conversations, p206-7)
