*POLARITY - also see OPPOSITE, BALANCE, TAO, YIN
The task assigned to the human race "to rise above the duality of creation and perceive the unity of the Creator" is man's highest goal. Those who cling to the cosmic illusion must accept its essential law of polarity. He who thus denudes the universe is the only true monotheist, all others are worshiping heathen images. (Yogi, p274)
We need to move beyond the distrust, the polarization, and the entrenched positions that have hampered our responses. (Gift of Peace, p130)
"Having and not having produce one another. Difficult and easy balance each other. Long and short complete one another. High and low rely on each other. Pitch and tone make harmony together. Beginning and ending follow each other." (Tao 2) Until we come to terms with our unconscious opposite, life is a continous quest for wholeness. Mature men become more aware of their feelings, learning to listen and to nurture others while women learn competence and assertiveness. The Tao teaches us to see beyond polarities. A man who prides himself on rationality and order will repress his passionate, sensous, and impulsive tendencies, which become part of his "shadow." He will criticize antone with passionate feelings, simultaneously repelled yet attracted to what he's repressed in himself. Our enemies and our lovers are projections of our shadow side.
