The 5 stages of mystic conscioussness are: 1. awakening or conversion, 2. self-knowledge or purgation, 3. illumination (or enlightenment, presence, transcendence, reality) 4. surrender (or dark night), 5. union (Mysticism by Underhill, p203)

When Jesus allowed Himself to be crucified, He was motivated by the desire to wake people up, to restore understanding and compassion, and to save people. (Buddha, Christ, p81)

God allows this purgation to last as long as it takes to bring our passions and desires for "lesser beyonds" to the point of illumination or reformation. An AWAKENING that goes this deep cannot occur without mortification, something in us has to die if something better is to be born. When lesser desires and passions are stilled, then we begin to taste something of transcendent peace and tranquility to let go and to be led by God. (Dark Night, p135-6)

We are invited to awaken in this process of evolution where depth increases from subconscious to self-conscious to superconscious, ON THE WAY TO ITS OWN SHOCKING RECOGNITION, utterly one with the radiant All, and we awaken as that oneness. Maybe the evolutionary sequence really is from matter to body to mind to soul to spirit. And in the highest reaches of evolution, maybe, just maybe, an individual's consciousness does indeed touch infinity - a total embrace of the entire Kosmos - a Kosmic consciousness that is Spirit awaken to its own true nature. (Everything, p42)

We carry within us the power of pure knowledge that was placed in our souls as seed. As it grows within our hearts, we are awakened to God. Our bodies are holy because they are the temples of God and he dwells there. From our thoughts seeds as produced. By the use of our tongue, our word, we plant them. By our deeds, we nurture them. (Awakening, p214)

The awakening of the self is to a new and more active plane of being, new and more personal relations with Reality; hence to new and more real work which it must do. (Mysticism, p238)
