*SACRED - also see SACRAMENT, HOLY
Jesus’ teachings united the sacred and the secular. His radical teachings equated humanity with divinity. The secular world of conflict becomes sacred when we remember our humanity in even the darkest moments. The everyday secular world becomes sacred when you use every experience as an opportunity to remember your inner heart of compassion. Life is a sacred journey, no matter where the road takes you. The sacred has often been thought of as that which is "set apart" because of a "special" closeness to God, that which is beyond question, that which is of such value that it inspires awe and reverence. But how can that be if God pervades the universe and the world around us, if God is the context for the whole of our lives? Rather, the sacred is that aspect of the world, those elements in it, that point towards God, that help us to become aware of God and to direct our lives towards God. It is that which yields our deepest meaning to us, whether person, place, event, or writings - they are particular bits of reality that point to the God who is through all reality. THEY REMIND US THAT THE WHOLE WORLD IS FULL OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD and that our lives are lived in this presence. Not just a portion of our lives, not just in certain times and places, but our whole lives. (Common Sense, p219-221)
