*COMPLACENT
Think of yourself as "good" and you could get complacent. Think of yourself as "bad" and you could give up any hope of improvement. (A Matter of Conscience, Christopher News Notes 8/96, SRC Newsletter March/April 97)
When our spiritual life passes blissfully from one experience to the next where we enjoy at smorgasbord of delightful treats: consolations, sensations, feelings of gratification, inspirations, we grow more and more complacent - we become content. Then comes an awakening that shakes our complacency to the core and we see the reality of our human condition which paradoxically lights our way to God. Overwhelmed by our nothingness, we are able to acknowledge the full depth of our dependency on God. Our lack of self-satisfaction pleases God because with this lowering of the shield of complacency, we really mean it when we say "Thy will be done." (Dark Night, p125-6)
