*IGNATIUS (of Loyola)
The "Spiritual Exercises" was grossly misunderstood and became tied up with rationalism, with reasoning and thinking and a so-called "discursive prayer" that appeals little to modern man, who wants mysticism. Modern people, like Hamlet, have had too many words, words, words and are exhausted by TV, radio, advertising, etc that McLuhan calls the extension of man's nervous system throughout our planet. What they want is deep interior silence. And this can be found through Zen as it could be found through Ignatius' method if it were properly understood. (Zen, p16)
"Ignatius spirituality is not just for Jesuits" but for everyone. Man's purpose is to give praise, reverence, and service to God and to find "God in all things and all things in God." and to find "God's will." Week 1 - purification by realizing we are "loved/redeemed sinners." Week 2 - know and encounter Christ with an application of our senses via imagination. Weeks 3 & 4 - Unitive way in the passion, death, resurrection of Christ, and evangelation. (Sr. May at SRC)
