*GURU - also see TEACHER, MASTER, LORD, ENLIGHTEN, ASCENDED, HINDU, YOGI, BUDDHA
In Sanskrit "Gu" means darkness and "ru" means light. Guru is one who destroys darkness and illusion and brings light and truth. A Guru's purpose is to raise your level of awareness to self-reliance. (Divine Rev, p55)
You come to your Guru not only to receive lessons, as from any teacher, but to actually receive the Guru's state of grace. (Eat, Pray, Love, p123)
But maybe you say "Jesus never meant for us to understand him literally, but rather in mystical way. We should not interpret his claim to divinity in a Western, Jewish, or Christian sense but rather in a Eastern, Hindu, or Buddhist sense. We are all gods and Jesus knew he was one. He was one of those spiritual masters or gurus who has traveled the spiritual road to Nirvana and reached it. (http://www.newlifechurcha2.org/index.php?q=node/62)
The one who has left all the materialistic things, renounces wealth and have detached himself from this world, The one who recites the name of God day and night. That person becomes the image of Lord, he becomes united with God and merges in the fearless Lord. There no longer remains any difference between that person and God. That person and God become One.” Sikh Gurus had become One with God before they preached about God in this world. The Bible says, “The Father and I are one” (John 10:31). Meaning that Jesus and God are one. Just like Sikh Gurus and God are one. God then sent Gurus to the earth to enlighten people. When Gurus were on earth they were a part of God, in other words the son of God but NOT God. Jesus never said he is God. Actually, he said over and over that he is the son of God, which means that he is not God. Jesus made it clear in many ways that he is not God; that God is greater. “If you truly loved me you would rejoice to have me go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I” (John 14:28). Jesus taught the mankind to pray to the Father, our Creator, not to himself.(http://www.realsikhism.com/faq/jesus.html)
In the case of the spiritual path (journey), it is still more difficult to find your way. The mind will mislead you very often. The Guru will be able to remove pitfalls and obstacles, and lead you along the right path. He will tell you: "This road leads you to Moksha (liberation); this one leads to bondage". Without this guidance, you might want to go to Badrinath, but find yourself in Delhi! The scriptures are like a forest. There are ambiguous passages. There are passages which are apparently contradictory. There are passages which have esoteric meanings, diverse significance, and hidden explanations. There are cross-references. You are in need of a Guru or Preceptor who will explain to you the right meaning, who will remove doubts and ambiguities, who will place before you the essence of the teachings. A Guru is absolutely necessary for every aspirant in the spiritual path. It is only the Guru who will find out your defects. The nature of egoism is such that you will not be able to find out your own defects. Just as a man cannot see his back, so also he cannot see his own errors. He must live under a Guru for the eradication of his evil qualities and defects. (http://www.dlshq.org/teachings/guru.htm)
"It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (John 16:7)
