Bam Earthquake

Bam’s earthquake brought tears to my eyes.

Not because it happened in my own country,

Not because it destroyed a citadel two millennia old.

It hurt because fifty thousand people died.

It hurt because it left so many orphans,

So many mothers lost their loved ones.

So many fathers felt helpless to save their family,

Buried alive under the rubble.

It was a disaster out of all proportions.

A disaster that could have been prevented.

If only we learnt how to open our eyes.

If only we could learn from our mistakes.
