Go to the Apple Menu > System Settings.
Click on Displays.
If the monitor isn't showing up, press and hold the Option (⌥) key. A "Detect Displays" button will appear in the bottom right of the window. Click it.

Wait at least 5 seconds, and plug it back in firmly. If you are using a hub/dongle, try plugging the dongle into a different port on your Mac.
Graphics Driver Reset
If the screen is still black, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.
You will hear a beep— this restarts the graphics driver and often forces the monitor to wake up.

A window will appear showing your active monitors. Click and hold one of the boxes—a red border will appear on the physical screen so you know which one you are moving.
