30 markers
Volleyball net or 'no go barrier' per 'group of 6

Download Volleyball - Week 3 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Warriors and dragons
Equipment
8 markers (to set out playing area).
3 balls.
1 set of braids or similar for at least one team
Activity set-up
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Divide students into two teams called 'warriors' and 'dragons'.
How to play
The dragons begin to move around the playing area.
The warriors pass the ball using an underarm serve to each other in an attempt to tag a dragon with the ball.
Once a dragon is tagged they become a warrior.
While a warrior is holding the ball, they cannot move and the ball cannot be thrown. It must be held and used to tag a dragon.
CHANGE it!
Vary the type of passing. (e.g. dig, spike or underarm serve)
Skill development
Activity 1 - Kolap
Equipment: 4 mini-volleyballs per pair and 4 tennis balls per pair
How to play: This object throwing game was played on Mer Island in the Torres Strait. ‘Kolap’ refers to the beans of the Kolap tree – the throwing objects Players throw and then underarm throw tennis ball and serve volleyballs onto a target, such as a mat, with the aim of reaching a set score.
Students form pairs and collect four marker cones to create their goal lines.
Use tennis balls at first and then introduce volleyballs.
The aim is to bounce the ball within the target.
Players use an underarm throw for the first round.
Introduce an underarm service action in the second round.
Activity 2 - Circle chase
Equipment: 1 mini-volleyball per group
How to play: Two players pass a ball to one another. An opponent between the two players attempts to intercept the ball. Players change roles frequently.
Players serve underarm.
The interceptor attempts to block or catch the serve.
Players swap roles when the interceptor is successful.
Activity 3 - Bucket and hoop
Equipment: 4 volleyballs per group of 3
How to play: From a throw, a ball is spiked to hit a hoop or bucket to score points. Play in groups of 3 players – a feeder, a spiker and a collector.
Feeder
Toss the ball above the head height of the spiker
Spiker
Spike the ball and try to make it hit the bucket or bounce inside the hoop.
Collectors
Collect the balls and return them to the feeder.
Players rotate roles every 6 attempts.
Activity 4 - Names
Equipment: 1 mini-volleyball per group
How to play: All players stand in a circle and pass a ball to each other. An interceptor inside the circle tries to intercept the ball. Only the interceptor can move.
Players on the circles can’t move.
The player throwing the ball calls out a name (the receiver) and passes the ball to that player using a dig, spike or set.
The player in the middle makes an intercept by blocking the ball with their hands.
If the ball is intercepted, the thrower changes places with the interceptor, or change after 4 throws.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Volleyball draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - Modified Volleyball
Equipment: A suitable indoor or outdoor area, a mini volleyball court (14m x 7m) with a net at a height of 2 metres, (a rope or no-go zone are suitable alternatives) one mini-volleyball (or similar) per game.
Set-up: Two playing areas to be set-up. Both games are played at the same time to allow all students to be active and engaged. Teams rotate.
How to play: 2 teams on a court with or without a net. A net is preferable. The serving team under arm serves the ball over the net from the back of the court. The opposing team has to catch the ball and keep it off the floor before spiking or digging the ball back over the net. The receivers become the servers and return the ball. First team to 25 is the winner.
The game starts with one player underarm serving the ball from the back half of their court across the net for an opponent to catch. The ball must be returned using a dig or spike.
Each player must stay within their own playing area.
A maximum of 3 passes using a dig or spike can be made between players before the ball is returned across the net.
Alternate serves and rotate server each time a point is won
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
