How to play
Students work in pairs, while one is the designated attacker and the other is the defender.
Both students start one metre apart and facing each other.
When a nominated player says ‘go’ (players take turns), the attacker must attempt to get past the defender without being tagged to score a point.
Allow 30 seconds, then players swap roles.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the starting distance between pairs.
Vary the locomotor moves.
Skill development games
Activity 1 - Interceptor
Equipment: Basketballs
How to play: Two players pass a ball to one another while an opponent between the two players tries to intercept the ball. Players change roles frequently.
Each group chooses an interceptor – the other 2 are passers.
The 2 passers try to keep possession of the ball. The interceptor tries to touch or catch the ball.
Rotate roles – after an agreed number of games, one of the passers becomes the interceptor.
Encourage faking and pivoting when passing.
Players cannot move their feet when they have the ball, unless they are pivoting.
Use different types of passes.
Activity 2 - Warriors and dragons
Equipment: Basketballs
How to play: One team called Warriors dribble and pass the ball to team-mates who try to tag an opposition called Dragons with the ball. If Dragons are tagged, they become Warriors. When all the Dragons are caught, the teams swap over.
Dragons can run but not into the moat because dragons can’t swim.
Warriors are not allowed to step with the ball or throw it at a dragon.
Warriors are not allowed to hold the ball for any longer than 3 seconds.
Introduce dribbling for the warriors.
Activity 3 - Keep the ball
Equipment: 1 basketball per group, bibs or sashes
How to play: Form 2 teams and distribute the players over the court. The team with the ball aims to make 5 passes between team-mates without the ball being intercepted. (Play in 2 teams of 3.)
The team with the ball
Try to make 5 passes between team-mates – then change possession.
Travelling with the ball is limited to 2 steps.
The team without the ball
If the defenders prevent 5 passes being made, they score one point and become the attacking team.
Activity 4 - Defenders on the line
Equipment: 1 basketball per group, bibs or sashes
How to play: The playing area has a scoreline at each end. The team with the ball aims to pass or dribble the ball over their opponent’s scoreline. (Play in 2 teams of 4.)
Team with the ball
Maintain possession for 3 minutes and cross their scoreline as many times as possible. After 3 minutes, possession changes. Vary the time to suit the group.
After scoring, the ball is thrown from the goal-line to a teammate. Defenders must stay back 3 metres until the ball is in play.
Team without the ball
Try to intercept the ball or tag a player with the ball.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the Basketball draw as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - Numbers
Equipment: Basketball, basketball hoop
How to play: Two teams stand on opposite sides of the court. Each player receives a number. You call out two numbers. The players with those numbers then run into the playing area and contest the ball you have thrown or rolled onto the court. The player that gains possession, and their partner, become the attackers, while the others become defenders. The attackers try to score a goal. (Play in 2 teams of even numbers.)
Each team stands on opposite sides of the playing area.
Give each player a number (with a corresponding number on the other team).
Randomly call 2 numbers (e.g. 1 and 5). Those two players from each team run into the playing area while all other players stay on the sideline.
The first number called is the only player allowed to contest the ball.
Roll or throw the ball into the playing area. The nominated players contest the ball to gain possession.
The team with the ball become the attackers and the other team the defenders. The attacking team tries to score a goal.
If defenders intercept the ball, they pass it back to you. Defenders then become attackers. Attackers dribble the ball, passing to each other to try and score a goal.
Modified basketball rules apply. Teams must have a shot at the basket within 30 seconds.
