FMS focus: Leap
Learning intention
Students are developing proficiency in the leap.
Success criteria.
Students display:
Eyes focused forward throughout the leap.
Knee of take-off leg bends.
Legs straighten during flight.
Arms held in opposition to the legs.
Trunk leans slightly forward.
Lands on ball of the foot and bends knee to absorb landing.
Explicit teaching of leaping
About the skill
The leap is a locomotor movement characterised by a take-off on one foot, a long flight phase and a landing on the opposite foot. Although it is an extension of the sprint run, it differs in that it is a discrete skill with a clear beginning and end point. It is basic to everyday activities, such as jumping over low obstacles, playground games such as hopscotch, and various team activities. The leap is also used in gymnastics and dance and is specific to events such as hurdling and the triple jump in athletics.
View 'The Get Skilled Get Active - Leap video' to support the explicit teaching of the leap.
Model the skill:
Revise the components of the leap:
Look straight ahead.
Bend knee to take off.
Scissor legs.
Stretch your arms out.
Lean into the leap.
Land softly.
Guided practice with immediate teacher feedback:
Students form groups of four. Each group has two short skipping ropes stretched out on the ground. Each student has a turn at leaping over the two ropes. Students should gradually increase the distance between the ropes to increase the distance of the leap.
Independent practice with immediate teacher feedback - River, tock, bridge:
In groups, students line up behind a marker. In front of each marker should be a ‘river’ made out of skipping ropes, a rock made out of beanbags and a bridge made out of markers that students leap over. On ‘Go’ the students follow their group around their obstacle course and then leap their way back to the starting marker. Remind students to look straight ahead, bend the knee of the take-off leg, scissor their legs in the air, stretch their arms out, lean slightly forward and land softly.
Skill development games
FMS focus activity - Frogs and lily pads
Skill focus: Leap
Equipment: A 10m x 10m square marked out by 4 cones (the pond), hoops to be used as lily pad
How to play: Players continuously leap from lily pad to lily pad. Play in groups of 4–8.
Randomly distribute the hoops inside the pond, making sure they are not too far away from each other (i.e. leaping distance).
Players leap from lily pad to lily pad and see how many they can land on in a given amount of time (e.g. 60 seconds).
If there is more than one frog on the lily pad, it will sink. If a player leaps onto a lily pad with another player already on it, the original player must immediately find another lily pad to leap onto.
Players may leap into the pond as well as onto the lily pads.
FMS consolidation activity - Nose and toes tag
Skill Focus: Static Balance
Equipment: 3 bibs for the taggers
How to play: Three taggers try to tag other players, who must hold their nose and toes if tagged.
When you say ’GO!’, three taggers try to tag other players.
Once tagged, a player must hold the toes of their left foot with their right hand.
To become free, they must touch their nose with their free hand and hold for 5 seconds
Modified small-sided games
It's game time!
Teams play each other in the game outlined below.
Baton relay
Skill focus: Leap
Equipment: 2 markers per group, 1 relay baton per pair of groups, hoops
How to play: Players in relay teams leap from one end to the other.
Half of the group lines up behind one marker and the other half behind the other marker.
Each group has a relay baton. On the teacher's signal, the first student in each team leaps with the baton to the other end. The baton may be a bean bag, cone or other small object.
When they reach the other end, they pass the baton to the next student who leaps back, then passes the baton on, until each student is back to their starting position.
Students who are waiting for a turn perform various movements (e.g. jog on the spot with high knees, squats or tuck jumps).
Introduce a hoop or marker for each team. Each student must leap over the hoop or marker before handing off the baton.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
