FMS focus: Catch
Learning intention
Students are developing proficiency in the catch.
Success criteria.
Eyes focused on the object throughout the catch.
Feet move to place the body in line with the object.
Hands move to meet the object.
Hands and fingers relaxed and slightly cupped to catch the object.
Catches and controls the object with hands only (well-timed closure).
Elbows bend to absorb the force of the object.
Explicit teaching of the catch
About the skill
Catching is a manipulative skill that involves being able to absorb and control the force of an object with a part of the body, preferably the hands. The ability to catch proficiently is important to most sports and games that involve an object, for example, cricket, football codes, netball, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics and playground games.
View 'The Get Skilled Get Active - 'Catch' video to support the explicit teaching of the catch.
Model the skill:
Model the catch to students while explaining the movements needed to effectively catch:
Say to the students:
Watch the object move into your hands.
Cup your hands.
Move to the ball.
Relax your hands.
Point your fingers up for a high ball.
Point your fingers down for a low ball.
Bend elbows to absorb the force of the object.
Guided practice with immediate teacher feedback:
Class catch champs
Class divides into pairs and students use one beanbag each.
Students form two lines facing their partners, one metre apart.
Adjacent pairs should stand at least two metres apart.
Students throw the beanbag back and forth with their partner.
They take one step back if they catch the beanbag and one step forward if they drop the beanbag.
FMS focus activity - Shuttle run
Skill focus: Catch
Equipment: A playing area big enough for the circles of players, one medium-sized ball per group.
How to play: A cooperative game. A ball is thrown to a catcher. The thrower runs to take the place of the catcher and the catcher in turn runs to join players at the thrower’s line. Teams of 3 or more.
Player 1 throws the ball to Player 2 and then runs to Line B.
Player 2 throws the ball to Player 3 and then runs to Line A.
Repeat this pattern until the ‘stop’ signal is given.
FMS consolidation activity - Frogs and lily pads
FMS focus: Vertical jump
Equipment: A 10m x 10m square marked out by 4 cones (the pond), hoops to be used as lily pads
How to play: Players continuously jump from lily pad to lily pad using a two‑foot takeoff and landing technique.
Randomly distribute the hoops inside the pond, making sure they are not too far away from each other (i.e. jumping distance).
Players jump from lily pad to lily pad and see how many they can land on in a given amount of time (e.g. 60 seconds).
If there is more than one frog on the lily pad, it will sink. If a player jumps onto a lily pad with another player already on it, the original player must immediately find another lily pad to jump onto.
Players may jump into the pond as well as onto the lily pads..
Modified small-sided games
It's game time!
Teams play each other in the game outlined below.
Keep the ball
Skill focus: Catch
Equipment: bibs or sashes, one medium sized ball, markers to set out playing area
How to play: 2 teams of 3 are distributed over the court. The team with the ball aims to make 5 passes between team‑mates without the ball being intercepted.
The team with the ball
Try to make 5 passes between team-mates – then change possession.
Travelling with the ball is limited to 2 steps.
The team without the ball:
If the defenders prevent 5 passes being made, they score one point and become the attacking team.
Note – No contact between players. Ball cannot be taken out of the hands of a player
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
