Download the Modified Rugby League - Week 4 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Capture
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area), 4 sets of 8 braids or similar (4 different colours).
How to play:
4 students are designated taggers who each wear a different coloured braid. The rest of the students are 'free'.
The taggers chase the students who are free and attempt to tag them.
When a free student is tagged they then put on a braid of the same colour worn by the student who has tagged them and become a tagger.
The aim is to tag the most students and create the biggest team.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the size of the playing area.
Use equipment while moving around the playing area (eg bouncing a ball)
Skill development games
Activity 1 - Buroinjin
Equipment: 1 football per game
How to play: Players pass the ball to one another in an attempt to run across a goal line and score a point. The opposition can intercept to gain possession or lightly touch a player with the ball. (Play in teams of 3–6.)
Use basic rugby league passes.
Start the game at the half-way mark.
Run and pass the ball.
Play to 6 touches before possession changes. The referee/coach will call ‘one’, ‘two’, …’six – change over’ as the touches are made.
If a player is touched by a defender while running with the buroinjin they must pass the ball within 3 steps from being touched.
If a player drops the buroinjin, they can pick it up again provided they have not been touched.
Activity 2 - Keep the Ball
Equipment: 1 football per game
How to play: Two teams of 3 players are distributed over the playing area. The team with the ball aims to make 5 passes between team-mates without the ball being intercepted.
Use basic rugby league passes.
The team with the ball try to make 5 passes between team-mates – then change possession.
Travelling with the ball is limited to 2 steps. The team without the ball
If the defenders prevent 5 passes being made, they score one point and become the attacking team.
Activity 3 - Defenders on the Line
Equipment: 1 football per game
How to play: The playing area has a scoreline at each end. The team with the ball aims to pass the ball over their opponents’ scoreline. Teams are allowed 3 minutes’ possession. (Play in teams of 4.)
Start play with a tap kick.
The player in possession runs toward their scoreline to score a try.
When tagged, the player plays the ball to re-start the game.
There must be 2 backward passes after each play-the-ball.
Defenders cannot move for 3 seconds after each play-the-ball or until after the second backward pass has been made.
One player can mark the player playing the ball.
Activity 4 - Interceptor
Equipment: 1 football per group
How to play: Two players pass a ball to one another. An opponent between the 2 players attempts to intercept the ball. Players change roles frequently.
Use a football for this activity.
Each group chooses an interceptor – the other 2 are passers. The interceptor must stay on the line.
The 2 passers try to keep possession of the ball. The interceptor tries to touch or catch the ball.
Rotate roles – after an agreed number of games, one of the passers becomes the interceptor. Alternatively, every time the interceptor touches or catches the ball, a point is scored.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Modified Rugby League draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - End to End
Equipment: 1 football per game, bibs or braids, cones
How to play: Players from 2 opposing teams are paired off and spread the length of the playing area. On your signal, the player with the ball at one end passes the ball to a team-mate in the next zone. This continues until a goal is scored at the other end. (Play with teams of 6.)
Players must pass backwards.
Players may run with the ball.
An attacker may run into adjacent zones if they have possession of the ball. They may only run one additional zone.
After entering another zone and passing or playing the ball, they must return to their original zone, and may not engage in play outside of their zone.
To score points the Goal Scorer must touch the ball down over the goal line (score a try).
If a player is tagged, they must stop and play the ball to a team-mate who continues the game.
If the Goal Scorer is tagged before scoring a try, a change of possession occurs. The Goal Scorer may not act as a defender.
Reflection
TAG
Ask students to form pairs with a student from their team.
Inform students they are going to give feedback to their partner using 'TAG'.
Tell your partner something they did well in today's session.
Ask your partner the question: How could we have worked together to score more touch downs in 'Team waves?'
Give your partner some feedback on a skill or tactic they could focus on during next week's session.
