Pepper
Have 1 batter and 4 dispersed players. The batter hits the ball off the batting tee, aiming for targets behind the fielders. The fielders defend the targets. Whoever fields the ball throws it to a receiver, who places it on the batting tee to be struck again. (Play in groups of 5.)
Equipment: 1 batting tee per group, bats, different targets (e.g. markers, bin, stumps, a wall), balls
How to play
Players bat off a tee.
The batter aims to hit targets set up between the fielders.
Fielders return the ball to the tee.
Safety
Use soft balls to make it safe for players.
Fielders need to be a safe distance from the batter and a safe distance from each other.
Batters should hit the ball below head height.
Fielders should call 'mine; when fielding the ball.
Modifying Pepper using TREE
Teaching style
Use player role models to demonstrate effective batting and fielding skills.
Use questioning to encourage players to think about their own strategies and technique.
Place staff helpers to help with each group to manage the game.
Rules
Establish a fielder-free area in front of the batter.
One bounce catch.
Equipment
Make it easier by using large, soft balls. Make it harder by using smaller balls but ensure they are soft for safety.
Vary the bat according to ability level. Have a variety of bats and allow players to choose.
Environment
Replicate the game in an adjacent area to ensure all participants are engaged.
Move the fielder line closer or further to the batter.
Increase the playing space and move fielders further apart.
Decrease the playing space to make it easier for the fielders.
Modified Tee Ball game
Learning intention
A fielding game that develops teamwork. Batters are challenged to place balls tactically and fielders challenged to effectively position themselves and to return the balls in the shortest time.
Skill focus
Catching
Defending
Shot placement
Spatial awareness
Throwing
Hit 4 and Go
A batter hits 4 consecutive balls into the field and then runs between marker cones as many times as possible. When the fielders have returned all 4 balls they call out ‘STOP!’ (4–5 per group).
Equipment: A suitable indoor or outdoor playing area as shown, range of bats/rackets and balls (sponge balls, softballs or tennis balls), marker cones (for running and playing area), batting tee(s)
How to play
Batter
Hits 4 balls, off a tee, one after the other, into the playing space.
When the last ball is hit, the batter runs between the marker cones as many times as possible.
Fielders
Fielders return the balls to the home base – balls must be inside the hoop to count.
Fielders call ‘STOP!’ when the last ball reaches home base.
Safety
Fielders should be at a safe minimum distance from the batter.
All fielders should keep an eye out for balls as well as other running fielders.
Players should communicate when retrieving a ball or throwing a ball.
Ensure the batter’s running area is away from fielders.
Modifying Hit 4 and Go using TREE
Teaching style
Players with less developed throwing/ catching/fielding/ batting skills can be assisted on the side.
Include all - Batters – 2 players work in tandem, e.g. one player hits and the other runs.
Rules
Running alternative – batters who have limited mobility can score by hitting into these gates, or by using a ‘runner’.
Rolling – use rolling to pass among fielders.
Fielders cannot move until the last ball is struck – fielders must take the ball to the home base and not throw.
Equipment
Use different bats and balls – allow player choice.
Use different heights of tee or alternative.
Environment
Increase / decrease the distance between cones.
Increase / decrease the size of the playing area.
