Targets
Download Golf - Week 3 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Empty the Nest
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area), 8 markers (to set out the 'no-go-zone), 1 tennis ball per three students.
How to play:
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Divide playing area at the centre with a zone (approximately 1m), called 'no-go-zone'.
Divide students into two groups.
Groups stand opposite each other on both sides of the ‘no-go-zone’ and each group is given the same number of tennis balls.
On the teacher's first signal, each group attempts to clear the tennis balls from their side of the playing area by throwing or rolling the balls into the other group's area.
On the teacher's second signal, all action stops then the tennis balls are counted.
CHANGE IT!
Students must pass the ball to another student before it is cleared from their playing area.
Vary the equipment used. (for example, bean bags, small or larger balls).
Skill development
Activity 1 - Boccia
Equipment: 4 Go Go Golf balls per player, 1 jack (target ball), 1 7-iron or putter per player
How to play: A target game requiring players to chip or putt as many of their balls as close to a target ball as possible.
Putt or chip the ball towards the target.
Activity 2 - Bucket and Hoop
Equipment: 4 Go Go Golf balls (or other suitable balls) per pair, 1 7-iron per player (or other lightweight hitting implement). Optional: Go Go Golf tees.
How to play: A ball is hit into a hoop or a bucket to score points. There are 2 roles – a hitter and a collector. (Play in pairs.)
Ask players to chip the ball towards the targets.
Set up targets at varying distances, worth different points.
Activity 3 - Hit the Target
Equipment: 2 Go Go Golf balls (or other suitable balls) per player, 1 7-iron or putter per player (or other lightweight hitting implement), variety of targets.
How to play: Targets are set up away from a hitting line. Players score points by chipping or putting a ball at the targets. (Play in groups of 3 or 4 or as individuals.)
Players putt or chip the ball towards the targets, trying to get them as close as possible to the targets without hitting them.
Points are scored by the player getting closest to the target.
Activity 4 - Continuous Cricket
Equipment: 4 marker cones (square 4x4 metres), 1 tennis ball or other soft ball per playing area, 1 7-iron per playing area (or other suitable hitting implement), 1 Go Go tee per playing area.
How to play: The hitter hits the ball off the tee, using a full swing, and runs between 2 wickets.
The ball is hit off a tee using a full swing.
The fielders must return the ball to the bowler, who calls stop. If the hitter is not back in time, they are out.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Golf Draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - Runners vs Passers
Equipment: Tennis balls or similar soft balls, 1 7-iron per team or similar lightweight bats, Go Go Golf tees or marker cones
How to play: Form a hitting team and a fielding team. The first hitter hits the ball and the entire team runs around markers. The fielders gather the ball and pass it to everyone in their team. When all the fielders have touched the ball, they call out ‘STOP!’. (Play with 4 or more per team.)
Players use a full swing to hit the ball into the field, from a tee or marker cone.
Batters
Using a tee, the ball is hit between B and C.
All batters attempt to run as a group to the finish position.
If the ball goes ‘wide’ (A–B or C–D), the shot is taken again.
Fielders
Field the ball and then move onto the infield.
The ball is passed to each fielder using a nominated throw, e.g. underarm throw.
Fielders must be at least 2 metres apart.
The last fielder to receive a pass calls ‘STOP!’
The ball is passed to the next batter
Scoring:
Each batter to reach the finish line before ‘STOP!’ is called scores one point.
Players can be caught out – if they are, no points are scored
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
