Week 3 - Basketball
Skill focus: Shooting and rebounding
Session equipment
Markers or cones
Basketballs
Basketball ring and backboard
Many of the activities in School Sport Basketball program require every player to have a ball, therefore any small, round ball can be used to ensure maximum participation.
Download the Basketball - Week 3 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Captains coming
Equipment: 8 markers to set out playing area
How to play:
Students begin by moving around the playing area in any direction.
When the teacher calls out a range of ‘ship commands’, students perform the action for 5-10 seconds.
Once complete, students resume jogging until the next command is called.
Ship commands
Bow - students run to the front of the area and perform a static balance.
Stern - run to the back and perform a static balance.
Port - run to the left and perform a static balance.
Starboard - run to the right and perform a static balance.
Climb the rigging - action of climbing the rigging.
Scrub the deck - down on one knee and scrub the floor.
Captain’s coming - stand to attention and salute.
CHANGE IT!
Define the types of static balance.
Vary the 'ship command' movements.
Replace static balance positions with movements (e.g. jumping jacks, high knees, squat jumps).
Skill development games
Activity 1 - Rebound ball
Equipment: 1 basketball per pair, several targets set up across a wall
How to play: A player shoots a ball at a wall (at an imaginary goal target) then quickly stands back for a second player to catch the ball, and so on. (Play in groups of 2 or 3.)
The first player shoots the ball at the target and moves quickly to the end of the team line, allowing the second player to move up and catch the ball. Continue down the line.
Allow a period for players to experiment with the best method of shooting.
Play against the clock (e.g. which team has given its players the highest number of turns in 40 seconds?)
Activity 2 - Boundary pass
Equipment: 1 basket (or a similar target) set up at each end of the court, 1 basketball per pair, marker cones
How to play: In pairs, players try to make as many passes to each other as they can in 60 seconds. To add a challenge, every pass has to be across a different boundary line. Players shoot when they get within shooting distance of either basket.
Start within the marked area near the centre.
All move in the same direction (e.g. clockwise).
Passes can only be made across a boundary line.
Players attempt to shoot a goal when they are near a basket or target. Have them shoot a different way each time (e.g. first a lay-up, then a jump shot).
Change partners on each round.
Activity 3 - Get the bean bag (basketball)
Equipment: 1 basket (or a similar target) set up behind the starting area, 3 basketballs per player
How to play: Players on opposite sides of a playing area each have 3 basketballs. Players run to the other side and steal one basketball at a time and dribble it back. Players must then successfully shoot a goal. The winner is the first player to increase their total to 5. (Play as individuals or in teams.)
Players can steal basketballs one at a time from any player opposite.
Dribble the basketball back to the start line and shoot a basket.
Players cannot steal another ball until they have made a successful shot
Activity 4 - Underarm return relay
Equipment: 1 basketball per team, basketball hoop
How to play: Players run to a mid-way point, pick up a ball and attempt to shoot a basket. They then gather the rebound, return the ball to the pick up point and tag the next player in line. The pattern continues.
Players pick up the ball at the mid-way point and shoot for goal.
Players gather the rebound and dribble the ball back to the midway point.
Tag the next player.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Basketball draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - End to end
Equipment: 1 basketball, marker cones, basketball hoop
How to play: Pair off players from 2 opposing teams and spread them the length of the court. On your signal, the player with the ball at one end passes the ball to a team-mate in the next zone. This continues until a basket is scored.
Form 2 even teams, one with bibs.
Players pair up with a member of the opposing team.
Players distribute themselves in pairs – one pair in each goal area and the other pairs in the centre zone.
The ball starts in the goal area.
The ball must be passed through the centre zone to the other goal area.
Defenders try to intercept the ball.
The goal scorer (attacking player) is the only player who can shoot for a goal. Rotate this position after each goal is scored.
Player must dribble ball while running.
Players in the goal area score by shooting a basket.
Modified basketball rules apply.
Teams must have a shot at the basket within 30 seconds.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
