FMS focus: Overarm throw
Learning intention
Students are developing proficiency in the overarm throw.
Success criteria.
Eyes are focused on target area throughout the throw.
Stand side-on to target area.
Throwing arm moves in a downward and backward arc.
Steps towards target area with foot opposite throwing arm.
Hips then shoulders rotate forward.
Throwing arm follows through, down and across the body.
Explicit teaching of the overarm throw
About the skill
The overarm throw is a manipulative skill frequently used in many sports, such as cricket, softball and baseball. The action is also used in athletics with the javelin, with the overhead serve and smash in tennis, volleyball and badminton and passes in netball and basketball.
View 'The Get Skilled Get Active - Overarm video' to support the explicit teaching of the overarm throw.
Model the skill:
Review the components of the overarm throw:
Look at your target.
Point to the target (with your nonthrowing arm).
Stand side-on.
Step forward and throw.
Follow through, down and across your body with your throwing arm.
Swing your arm down and back as you prepare to throw.
Step, throw and follow-through down and across your body.
Guided practice:
Students form groups of five and each person has a tennis ball. Each group forms a ten metre circle around a bin/ ball or marker. On a whistle each group member continually overarm throws the ball at the bin. Each group aims to hit the bin as many times as they can within the time given. Students should complete the activity using both arms.
Independent practice with immediate teacher feedback:
Allocate a playing area. Spread hoops around the area like a golf course. Students move around the area with a partner starting at hole one. Allocate a certain number of throws that students should perform to get their beanbag into the hoop. All throws must be performed overarm.
Skill development games
FMS focus activity - Hit the target
Skill focus: Overarm throw
Equipment: A variety of targets – such as 2-litre (or larger) plastic bottles with a little sand in the bottom, cricket wickets or buckets, objects to throw – softballs, beanbags, tennis balls, soccer balls – 2 per player.
How to play: Targets are set up away from a throwing line. Players score points by throwing a ball at the targets. Play in small groups, 3–4 per group.
Players throw or roll a ball to hit or land in targets.
Each player has a set number of throws (e.g. 2).
Play is stopped to re-position targets that have been knocked over
FMS consolidation activity - Get the bean bag
Skill focus: Skip
Equipment: Various types of balls (baseballs, foam, tennis etc) or small bean bags.
How to play: Players to run to opposing team’s area and steal a ball, the first team to get a total of 5 balls win.
Set up a field approximately 15-20m in length with enough lanes to accommodate for the number of players per team.
Split the players up into teams of two. Each team should have one player at either end of the field.
Allocate players on opposite sides of a playing area with 3 balls.
Players skip to the other side and steal one ball at a time.
The winner is the first player to increase their total to 5
Modified small-sided games
It's game time!
Teams play each other in the game outlined below.
Target, throw and run
Equipment: Marker cones, targets, ball, hoop (launchpad)
How to play: A ‘thrower’ throws a ball at a target and then runs to a base and back before fielders place the ball on the ‘thrower’s’ area. Play with 5 or more.
Setting up:
Marked area (‘launch pad’) for the thrower.
Fielders spread out but not on the line between the thrower and the target.
Set up a base about 3 metres away to run around (e.g. cone marker).
Target – choose an ‘achievable’ target. Experiment according to the group.
Any balls suitable for throwing or rolling.
Playing:
Ball is thrown at target and the thrower runs around the base. A bonus point is received for a hit.
The fielders collect and throw the ball to team-mates and attempt to place it on the ‘launch pad’ before the thrower returns.
If fielders beat the thrower, the thrower becomes a fielder and the fielder the new thrower – ensure all fielders have a turn.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
