Week 3 - Hockey
Skill focus: Passing and movement
Session equipment:
Markers or cones
1 x Hockey stick per player
Hockey balls (or similar)
Download Hockey - Week 3 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Fish in the Net
Activity set-up
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Select two groups of three students to act as 'nets'.
The remainder of students will act as 'fish'.
How to play:
Students acting as nets need to link hands in a chain, while the remaining students are the fish.
As the fish move around the area, the nets attempt to catch as many fish as possible by either surrounding or tagging them.
When a fish is caught they link hands and join the net.
When the net contains 4 people, split the net to become two separate nets of 2 students.
Skill development games
Choosing teams
In a sport education approach, affiliation is promoted by students being a member of the same team over a period of time. It is intended that students remain in these teams for the duration of each sport program for the skill development and the modified small-sided games, so that they can develop and learn together.
Place students in equal teams, 4 teams is optimal, at the beginning of the skill development session. Strategies for forming groups can be found in the Game-based learning in sport and physical activity e-learning course.
To further promote affiliation students can decide on a team name.
Once the teams are determined you can add the team and student names to the Hockey Draw Template.
Activity 1 - Underarm return relay
Equipment: 1 hockey stick per player, 1 hockey ball (or similar) per group
How to play: Players run to a point, return and on the way back (at the pick-up point) collect a ball and push it to the team-mate next in line. The pattern continues. (Play with 4 or more.)
After running around the point, Player 1 pushes the ball to Player 2 from the pick-up point.
Player 2 traps the ball and pushes it back to Player 1, who is still at the pick-up point.
Player 1 traps the ball and leaves it on the line.
Player 1 returns to the end of the line while Player 2 continues the pattern.
Activity 2 - Pass and run
Equipment: 1 hockey stick per player ,1 hockey ball per pair
How to play: Runners run in parallel down opposite sides of a pitch dribbling the ball and pushing/passing the ball to each other. Interceptors try to intercept the ball but are restricted in their movements. Interceptors can only run up and down their designated line. (Play with 8 or more.)
Players push the ball to one another using a hockey stick.
If the ball is intercepted, players swap roles.
Activity 3 - Keep the ball
Equipment: 1 hockey stick per player, 1 hockey ball per group
How to play: One defender and 3 attackers are distributed over the pitch. The team with the ball aims to make 5 passes between teammates without the ball being intercepted.
Players push the ball to one another using hockey sticks.
Players swap roles after each 30 seconds.
Activity 4 - End ball
Equipment: 1 tennis ball (or similar) per field, 1 hockey stick per player
How to play: One player starts with the ball on the baseline and rolls the ball to team-mates in each zone. The object is to get the ball to the end player. (Play with teams of 4–7.)
Each player has 3 seconds to roll the ball.
After a goal is scored, the ball is given to the opposition to restart the game.
Players use hockey sticks and push the ball.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Hockey draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Defenders on the line
Equipment: 1 hockey stick per player, 1 hockey ball per group
How to play: The playing area has a goal zone at each end. The team with the ball aims to pass or dribble the ball into one of the goal zones. Teams are allowed 3 minutes’ possession to score as many goals as possible. (Play with 2 teams).
Team with the ball
Maintain possession for 3 minutes and cross their scoreline as many times as possible. After 3 minutes, possession changes. Vary the time to suit the group.
Each attacking player must touch the ball before each shot at goal.
After scoring, the ball is thrown from the goal-line to a team-mate. Defenders must stay back 3 metres until the ball is in play.
Team without the ball
Try to intercept the ball or tag a player with the ball.
Scoring
Players in possession push the ball across their own scoreline – score 1 point.
Score as many points as possible in 3 minutes
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
