Fast start
Small-sided games
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Set-up playing area prior to the session..
Players participate in the games as a team.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Fast start - Home Base
Equipment: 8 markers per group (to set out each playing area), 1 coloured marker per student.
How to play:
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Each student is given a coloured marker to place somewhere in the playing area, which they will call their 'home base'.
On the teacher's signal, students will run around and try to touch five different markers then return to their home base.
CHANGE IT!
Allocate students a higher number of markers to touch.
Allow students to touch as many markers as possible over a set amount of time (e.g. 30 seconds).
Vary the locomotor movement used.
When a student returns to their home base they must perform a movement (e.g. jumping o the bank, tuck jump on the river).
Small sided games
Scoring
Teams score points when:
Servers – a point is scored if the ball touches the ground in the receivers’ area.
Receivers – a point is scored if the servers hit the ball outside the receivers’ court.
Score to a set number of points (e.g. 10) or set time limit (e.g. 4 minutes).
Cooperative emphasis – make the length of the rally the objective.
Newcombe Ball (Volleyball)
Equipment: Tennis, badminton or volleyball court with a net. Each half is divided into four – use masking tape as shown, net at medium height (or no-go zone), one soft volleyball or similar, marker cones.
How to play: 2 teams on a court with or without a net. A net is preferable. The serving team sends the ball over the net from the back of the court. The opposing team has to catch the ball and keep it off the floor. The receivers become the servers and return the ball. (Play with 8 per court, 4 v 4.)
The game starts with one player tossing the ball from the back half of their court across the net for an opponent to catch.
Each player must stay within their own playing area.
A maximum of 3 passes can be made between players before the ball is returned across the net.
Alternate serves and rotate server each time a point is won.

Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What will you take away from the Net and court games that you can use for our next sport?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
