Download Ultimate Frisbee - Week 3 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Empty the Nest
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area), 8 markers (to set out the 'no-go-zone), 1 frisbee per three students.
How to play:
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Divide playing area at the centre with a zone (approximately 1m), called 'no-go-zone'.
Divide students into two groups.
Groups stand opposite each other on both sides of the ‘no-go-zone’ and each group is given the same number of frisbees.
On the teacher's first signal, each group attempts to clear the frisbees from their side of the playing area by throwing or rolling the frisbees into the other group's area.
On the teacher's second signal, all action stops then the frisbees are counted.
CHANGE IT!
Students must pass the frisbee to another student before it is cleared from their playing area.
Vary the equipment used. (for example, bean bags, small or larger balls).
Skill development
Activity 1 - 4 Square
Equipment: 1 x frisbee per game, cones
How to play: A playing area is divided into 4 and a player from each team goes into a square. The team in possession of the frisbee throws it to a team-mate in any of the 4 squares, trying to avoid interception. Players stay in their square. (Play in teams of 4.)
Use frisbees.
One team takes possession of the frisbee (receivers) and tries to make as many passes as possible between themselves. The other team (interceptors) tries to intercept the frisbee.
Defenders must be at least 1 metre from the thrower
Activity 2 - Interceptor
Equipment: 1 x frisbee per game, cones
How to play: Three players stand on 3 of the 4 corners of a square, with an interceptor in the middle. Players change roles frequently. (Play in groups of 4.)
Players can only pass to a corner adjacent to theirs but not across the square.
Players without the frisbee can lead to a corner next to their own to receive a pass or provide an option.
The interceptor must be at least 1 metre from the thrower.
Activity 3 - Run the Circle
Equipment: 2 x frisbees per group
How to play: Players form a circle and 2 frisbees are passed from player to player. The aim is for one frisbee to catch up to the other.
Pass the frisbees around the circle, trying to overtake the frisbee in front.
Call ‘change’ to change the direction.
Activity 4 - No-Go
Equipment: 1 x frisbee per group, marker cones
How to play: Players are divided into 2 teams separated by a no-go barrier. The frisbee is thrown across the barrier. The opposing team must catch it and send it back. (Play in teams of 3.)
Have a maximum of 3 passes per team before returning the frisbee.
Players must catch the frisbee on the full.
The team that wins the point restarts with a throw from behind the end line.
The first team to 10 points wins
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Ultimate frisbee Draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - Youth Ultimate Frisbee
Equipment: 1 x frisbee per game, cones
How to play: A team attempts to pass a frisbee among themselves up the field without dropping it, until it is caught by a team member in the end zone, which scores a point. (Play in teams of 7 or less.)
The defensive team starts by throwing the frisbee to the opposing team.
The opposing team become the attackers and try to pass the frisbee down the field towards their end zone.
Players cannot run with the frisbee.
Players may hold the frisbee for up to 10 seconds before passing.
Possession changes when:
– the attacking team does not complete a pass (the pass does not reach the catcher on the full or the catcher drops the frisbee).
– the defending team intercepts or knocks the frisbee to the ground. – the frisbee goes over the sideline.
Play for a set period of time. The winning team is the one with the most points.
Scoring:
To score a point, the attacking team must receive the frisbee on the full in the opposition’s end zone.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
