Download Lawn Bowls - Week 2 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Fish in the net
Equipment
8 markers (to set out a playing area approximately 25m x 25m)
Activity set-up
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Select two groups of three students to act as 'nets'. • The remainder of students will act as 'fish'.
How to play:
Students acting as nets need to link hands in a chain, while the remaining students are the fish.
As the fish move around the area, the nets attempt to catch as many fish as possible by either surrounding or tagging them.
When a fish is caught they link hands and join the net.
When the net contains 4 people, split the net to become two separate nets of 2 students.
Skill development games
Activity 1- Bombard
Equipment: 2 tennis balls per player, 1 target ball – a slightly deflated beach ball is best for hard surfaces.
How to play: Two or more teams working in parallel roll tennis balls at a large target ball and try to move the target ball over a goal line. (Play with 2 or more teams of 4–6.)
Target balls are placed 2–3 metres from the start line.
Teams move in parallel and in the same direction.
Roll the balls at the target.
Activity 2 - Hit the Square
Equipment: One tennis ball per pair, chalk to mark target (1-metre square target), marker cones to identify 8-10m playing area).
How to play: Two pairs of players on opposite sides of a square bowl a ball so it stops in the target. The first team to score 10 points is the winner. (Play in groups of 4.)
Nominate one pair to start.
Roll the ball into the target area.
Pairs alternate with throwing.
Players take a step back each time the ball stops in the target area
Activity 3 - Snakes Alive
Equipment: Cones to separate groups, one softball or medium-sized ball per team (snake head), one ball per player, e.g. tennis ball (body of snake), tape or cones to mark minimum throw line.
How to play: The first ball rolled becomes the head of the snake. Players deliver one ball at a time, aiming to place each ball behind the previous one. The aim is to form the longest snake. (Play with 4 or more per team).
Each team plays the first ball on a signal.
If the first ball strays to another team’s area, the ball is played again.
The second ball is played on a signal, and so on for the remainder of the balls.
To ensure the last ball is a meaningful roll, a line is placed in front of each team and the ball must go beyond the line for the ball to count – otherwise every team will finish with a python!
Activity 4 - Koolchee
Equipment: An area about the size of a basketball court, 1 tennis ball per player.
How to play: A ball rolling game. Koolchees are rolled either to hit other koolchees or to knock over a skittle. (Play in pairs.)
Players at each end of the playing area bowl their ball, aiming at a centre line and for both balls to meet and stop in the middle.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Lawn Bowls Draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - Kolap
Equipment: Tennis balls, targets, marker cones.
How to play: Pairs roll balls (kolaps) to stop on a target. If the ball goes outside of the target, the player tries again from where the ball stops. The game continues until all balls are in the target. Players aim to reach a set score. (Play in teams of 2.)
Play in pairs, and each player has 4 kolaps.
One at a time, players roll the kolap at a target.
If the kolap lands outside of the target, the player tries again from where the kolap stopped.
Continue until all kolaps are within the target.
Once one pair lands all kolaps within the target, then next pairs begin.
Scoring:
Play until a nominated combined score of 20 is reached by one of the teams.
