Explicit teaching of the dodge
About the skill
The dodge is a locomotor skill that involves a high degree of balance and stability. It is an extension of the side gallop and sprint run and incorporates dynamic, fluid and coordinated movement to change direction. It is common to many playground games and activities and is an important skill in the majority of team sports.
View 'The Get Skilled Get Active - Dodge video' to support the explicit teaching of the dodge.
Model the skill:
Revise the components of the dodge:
Look straight ahead.
Use the outside of your foot.
Lower body height down and then up when changing direction.
Use your knees to change direction.
Use only one step to change direction.
Lower body height and transfer body weight.
Guided practice with immediate teacher feedback:
Students work in groups of five and line up between two markers. The markers should be five metres away from the students at each end. When the teacher blows the whistle the first student on the right performs a dodge and then runs to the marker on the right, dodges the marker, runs to the marker at the other end, dodges the marker and then runs back to tag the next student. This continues until all students have had a turn. The students run, hop or jump on the spot while they wait for their turn.
Independent practice: Team tag
Students work in groups of five. Two teams are combined into one group: five are ‘runners’ and five are ‘taggers’. Use markers to allocate a playing area for each team and put two hoops inside each playing area. The teams begin at opposite ends of the area. The object of the game is for the runners to cross the space without being touched by the taggers. The runners are safe when they are inside one of the hoops. Runners have a set time, for example, one minute to cross the area. Teams then switch roles and repeat the activity.
Skill development games
FMS Focus Activity - Pirate's treasure
Skill Focus: Dodge
Equipment: 20 balls (or similar), markers cones, hoop
How to play: Teams try to collect the most balls (or similar) from the giant’s treasure before ‘Time!’ is called or before they are tagged by the giant who is protecting the treasure. Play in groups of eight or more.
Organise players into four groups.
An additional player is designated as the giant to guard the treasure.
The giant roams the space around the treasure.
All balls are placed in the centre of the playing area.
When you call ‘Go!’, one player from each group attempts to steal one ball at a time and pass it back to their group.
Players tagged by the giant must return to their group and start again.
When all balls in the centre are gone, players may attempt to take a ball from other groups.
FMS Consolidation Activity - Scissors, paper, rock
Skill Focus: Side gallop
Equipment: Marker cones
How to play: Students play scissors, paper, rock with the winner chasing their partner using side gallop.
Students stand on a line facing each other with their fists touching in the dodge ready position (down low).
On the call ‘scissors, paper, rock’ students move their arms to reflect the action. If students win the hand, they chase their partner using side gallop to the end lines. If there is a tie students keep playing until someone wins.
Modified small-sided games
It's game time!
Teams play each other in the game outlined below.
Dodge the ball
Skill focus: Dodge
Equipment: Balls, cones to mark playing area
How to play: Players are divided into 2 teams separated by a ‘no-go’ barrier. The ball is rolled across the barrier. Students dodge to avoid being hit by the ball.
Use a basketball court or mark out an area with a centre line.
Students are divided into two teams and each team is given three balls.
When the whistle is blown, students roll the balls into the other team’s area trying to hit the other team below the knees.
Students should use the dodge to avoid the balls.
If students are hit by a ball they run around the outside of the area once and then move back onto the court.

Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
