Golf gala day
Organisation
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Explain the organisation:
Break teams into two.
All teams will play at the same time, beginning on different holes.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Give students 5 minutes to meet as a team to decide on strategies for the game.
If time, play the course twice.
Setup
Set up a course outside, with around 9 holes (depending on the time available).
Each hole should be the length of around 2–3 shots to reach the green, based on the ability of the players and the hitting implement used. Vary this between holes.
For each hole, set up a tee (marker cones), hazards (ropes or mats), obstructions (chairs or bins) and a green (hoops or a roped area).
Each team starts at a different tee.
Rules and guidelines
Overview
Ambrose format — a team play format whereby each player plays a shot and the ball finishing in the best position is chosen by the team captain. All players then take a shot from this position, and so on. This form of play continues until the ball is holed out.
Rules
Ambrose
All players hit their first shot.
Players then pick the best shot and all hit their second shot from that spot.
This continues until the ball is on the green.
Scoring
The number of 'selected’ (best) shots count (individual shots do not).
A ball is considered ’holed out’ when it lands on the green.
One penalty stroke is scored if the ’selected’ shot is in a hazard area.
Teams total points at the end of the game. The team with the lowest score is the winner.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What skills / strategies will you take away from golf that you can use for our next sport?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
Golf certificates
Teachers may choose to award students with certificates for their involvement in the Golf unit.
