Week 1 - Basketball
Skill focus: Ball handling, catching and passing
Session equipment
Markers or cones
Basketballs
Many of the activities in School Sport Basketball program require every player to have a ball, therefore any small, round ball can be used to ensure maximum participation.
Download the Basketball - Week 1 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Fish in the net
Equipment
8 markers to set out playing area
How to play
Students acting as nets need to link hands in a chain, while the remaining students are the fish.
As the fish move around the area, the nets attempt to catch as many fish as possible by either surrounding or tagging them.
When a fish is caught they link hands and join the net.
When the net contains 4 people, split the net to become two separate nets of 2 students.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the number of nets.
Vary the size of the playing area.
Skill development games
Choosing teams
In a sport education approach, affiliation is promoted by students being a member of the same team over a period of time. It is intended that students remain in these teams for the duration of each sport program for the skill development and the modified small-sided games, so that they can develop and learn together.
Place students in equal teams, 4 teams is optimal, at the beginning of the skill development session. Strategies for forming groups can be found in the Game-based learning in sport and physical activity e-learning course.
To further promote affiliation students can decide on a team name.
Once the teams are determined you can add the team and student names to the Basketball draw template.
Activity 1 - Shuttle ball
Equipment: Marker cones, one basketball per team.
How to play: A cooperative game where one player throws the ball to a catcher then runs to take their place. The catcher in turn runs to join the players at the thrower’s line. (Play in teams of 3 or more.)
Player 1 throws the ball to Player 2 and then runs to Line B.
Player 2 throws the ball to Player 3 and then runs to Line A.
Repeat this pattern until the ‘stop’ signal is given.
Activity 2 - Pairs passing
Equipment: Marker cones to establish batting line and designated hitting area, hitting tee’s, bats and balls.
How to play: Players form pairs. On your signal, players pass the ball to each other for 30 seconds. At the end of 30 seconds, the player without the ball moves to form a new pair. Passing starts again.
Pairs distribute themselves and wait for the signal ‘go’.
Pairs pass to each other at their own rate for 30 seconds.
At the end of 30 seconds the player without the ball moves to find another player with a ball. The activity is repeated.
Change the types of passes, eg. chest pass, overhead pass, bounce pass.
Activity 3 - Back to back pass
Equipment: Basketballs (or similar)
How to play: In pairs, players are back to back and pass a ball to one another. Play with 4 or more.
With one ball per pair, players pass the ball back and forth.
Ball must change hands completely.
Explore different passes – make up new ones. A pool provides extra scope for inventiveness.
After exploration – set a time period (e.g. number of passes in 20 seconds).
Highlight successful passes. Ask children to show their successful passes.
Station 4 - Long throw
Equipment: Markers or cones, basketballs.
How to play: The ball is thrown between two players. If the ball reaches the catcher on the full, both the catcher and the thrower step back. If it is dropped, both take a step forward.
Distribute one ball per pair.
Use 2 markers to establish a ‘gate’ that the ball has to pass through.
Players are equidistant from a marker.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Basketball draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Scoring:
One point for each successful pass in the playing area.
Game - 5-point player
Equipment: 15 touch footballs, 8 marker cones (4 colours)
How to play: Attackers score points by passing to each other for 30 seconds. For bonus points, the ball is passed to a team-mate in one of the two end zones. Defenders try to intercept the ball. (Play in 2 teams.)
Attackers
Have 30 seconds to score as many points as possible.
End-zone – one attacking player only, all team members have a turn.
Option – the player passing the final ball has a turn in the end-zone.
Defenders
Must stand 1m from attackers; no body contact.
No restriction on the number of defenders in the end zone.
If the defenders intercept the ball it is placed on the ground for an attacker to resume play. Play continues for attackers until 30 seconds elapses, then the ball changes over.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
