Download Modified Rugby League - Week 3 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Ready, set, go
Equipment: 8 markers to set up 25m x 25m playing area
How to play:
Students scatter in the playing area. On the teacher’s signal, they start running around in the space. Students are given the following instructions to respond to:
Red –freeze on the spot
Yellow – leap around the area
Green – run around the area
CHANGE IT!
Increase the complexity of the three movements. For example, jumping jacks, high plank, and balance on one leg.
Decrease the complexity of the three movements. (eg. balance on one leg, clap hands, do arm circles)
Students move in one direction only (e.g. clockwise/anti-clockwise).
Vary the locomotor movements.
Skill development games
Activity 1 - Pass and Run
Equipment: 2 or 3 footballs per pair
How to play: Players run in parallel down opposite sides of the playing area, passing the ball to each other. Interceptors try to intercept the ball but are restricted in their movements. Interceptors can only run up and down their designated line, as shown. (Play with 8 or more per group.)
Start - arrange players as shown.
Runners start.
The ball must be passed backwards.
Runners score a try at each end.
Interceptors score a point for tagging a ball carrier.
Runners (attackers)
Runners pass, catch and run with the ball as they try to get to the other end of the court.
Runners then jog around the outside of the court back to the start. Start the second pair of runners as the first pair approaches the end of the court.
Interceptors (defenders)
Try to intercept the ball – no contact or tagging.
Can only move sideways along their line as shown.
Activity 2 - Hit the Target
Equipment: 2-3 footballs per group, targets, marker cones
How to play: Targets are set up away from a kicking line. Players score points by kicking a ball at the targets. (Play in groups of 3 or 4.)
Use various types of kicks e.g. drop punt and grubber kicks.
Activity 3 - Throw, throw, throw
Equipment: 1 football per player, cones to mark line
How to play: Two groups of equal size face each other. Each player has a ball. On your signal, players throw their balls over a line in the direction of the opposite team. After a set period, balls are counted to see who has the fewest balls.
Use footballs.
Use basic rugby league passes or grubber kicks.
Activity 4 - Bombard
Equipment: 1 or 2 footballs per player, 1 large ball
How to play: Two or more teams facing each other pass or kick a football at a large target ball and try to move the target ball over their opponents’ goal line. (Play in teams of 4–6.)
Use basic rugby league passes or grubber kicks.
Once all the balls have been thrown or kicked (1 or 2 attempts per player), you call ‘STOP!’ and all the balls are collected for another attempt.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Modified Rugby League draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - End to End
Equipment: 1 football per game, bibs or braids, cones
How to play: Players from 2 opposing teams are paired off and spread the length of the playing area. On your signal, the player with the ball at one end passes the ball to a team-mate in the next zone. This continues until a goal is scored at the other end. (Play with teams of 6.)
Players must pass backwards.
Players may run with the ball.
An attacker may run into adjacent zones if they have possession of the ball. They may only run one additional zone.
After entering another zone and passing or playing the ball, they must return to their original zone, and may not engage in play outside of their zone.
To score points the Goal Scorer must touch the ball down over the goal line (score a try).
If a player is tagged, they must stop and play the ball to a team-mate who continues the game.
If the Goal Scorer is tagged before scoring a try, a change of possession occurs. The Goal Scorer may not act as a defender.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
