Basketball gala day
Organisation
In the week prior to the gala day, organise students into teams.
Students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala day.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala day.
Set-up Basketball games as a circuit for teams to rotate around.
Games for the gala day include:
Pairs Passing
Underarm Return Relay
Find the Goal line
Basketball games
Pairs passing
Players form pairs. On your signal, players pass the ball to each other using a goal shooting action for 30 seconds. At the end of 30 seconds, the player without the ball moves to form a new pair and shooting starts again.
Equipment: Basketball, hoops, marker cones
How to play
Players pass the ball to one another with a goal shooting action.
Experiment by shooting with one hand or both hands.
Shoot the ball through a hoop held horizontally.
Safety
Ensure adequate space for number of players.
Modifying Pairs passing using TREE
Teaching style
Ask the players how they can ensure everyone is included.
Highlight good examples of throwing and catching. Ask the group why they think the pair has been chosen as a role model.
Rules
Players who have mobility impairments remains in the same spot while their partner moves on.
Vary the type of pass. Ask class for suggestions after providing options
Do the activity in 3s – adjust cones so players don’t bump into each other.
Equipment
Use different balls – vary size, shape, density and hardness.
Environment
Bigger or smaller
Change the distance between pairs of cones.
Underarm return relay
Players run to a mid-way point, pick up a ball and attempt to shoot a basket. They then gather the rebound, return the ball to the pick up point and tag the next player in line. The pattern continues. (Play with 4 or more.)
Equipment: Marker cones, balls
How to play
Players pick up the ball at the mid-way point and shoot for goal.
Players retrieve the ball and puts the ball back on the mid way line.
Players cannot take more than one step without dribbling.
Safety
Choose a ball to suit the ability of the players.
Players need to watch for the ball rebounding off the basket.
Modifying Underarm return relay using TREE
Teaching style
Modify the basket/target to suit the age and ability of the children. It needs to be achievable.
Do not allow players to shoot from long distances.
Use players as role models to highlight competent skills.
Rules
Vary the pass – an easy version starts with the players close to one another and passing the ball, hand to hand. Use different levels, e.g. knees, shoulder or above the head.
Catch, do something and throw – e.g. bounce, around the body, through the legs.
Players can bounce the ball with two hands.
Equipment
Use different balls – vary size, shape and hardness.
Use different number of balls, eg. 1 or 3.
Environment
Reduce the distance between the mid-way line and the basket.
Find the goal line
The team with the ball passes it among their team-mates, aiming to get it over their goal line. All team-mates must touch the ball at least once before a team scores. Running with the ball is not permitted. Once a player catches a ball over their goal line, they can take a shot at the basket. (Play in 2 teams of 6.)
Equipment: Suitable indoor or outdoor playing area, 4 cones to mark goals, bibs or alternative to distinguish between players,1 medium-sized ball
How to play
Players are distributed as shown. One player from each team should be within stepping distance of their goal line.
Bibbed team starts with the ball.
Pass the ball from player to player without running.
Once a player gets the ball over their goal line, they can take one shot at the basket for bonus points.
Interceptors may run.
Try to intercept the ball without making body contact.
Safety
Ensure adequate space for number of players.
No contact between players.
Ball cannot be taken out of the hands of a player.
Modifying Find the goal line using TREE
Teaching style
Use an ‘interceptor-free’ zone.
Because players don’t run with the ball, the activity accommodates a wide range of ability levels
‘ Freeze-frame’ games (i.e. stop the play at key moments) to highlight good examples of attack and defence. But use the ‘freezeframe’ sparingly and let the kids play!
Rules
Passing – restrict type of pass or allow a variety of passes.
Goal line – allow the player near the goal line to run the full width of the goal line. Establish a goal zone and restrict the area to the goal scorer.
Use safe zones for players with limited mobility.
Have more attackers than defenders.
Equipment
Use different balls – vary size, shape, colour contrast and hardness depending on the ability of the players.
Use different goals, eg. hoops, bin, box, bucket.
Environment
Bigger or smaller
Different widths for goal
Different goals: e.g. plastic bucket, netball goal ring
Basketball awards
Teachers may choose to award students with certificates for their involvement in the Basketball unit.
Certificates available for download include:
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
