Week 2 - Golf
Skill focus: Chipping and putting
Session equipment:
Markers or cones
Tennis balls
Go-go golf balls (or similar)
Golf clubs (or similar)
Go-go golf tees
Targets
Download Golf - Week 2 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Alphabets
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area).
How to play:
Students move around the playing area using a nominated locomotor movement. The teacher calls out a letter of the alphabet and students form groups of three to make the shape of that letter.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the number of students required in each group.
Students must form multiple letters to make up a word.
Skill development games
Activity 1- Weme
Equipment: 1 Go Go Golf ball (or similar ball) per player, 1 putter per player
How to play: The Walbiri people of central Australia played a stone bowling game called Weme. One player threw a stone which was used as a target by the second player. Players alternate turns with each aiming at the other’s stone. Balls replace stones and the balls are hit (chipped or putted) rather than thrown.
The first player putts a ball towards the distant line.
After a ‘fair roll’ which stops before the line, the second player putts their ball to try to hit the first ball. A point is scored for a hit.
Both players then collect their balls and the game starts from the other end.
Players alternate turns. The second player has the first turn.
Activity 2 - Hit the Square
Equipment: 1 Go Go Golf ball per player (or similar ball), 1 7-iron or putter per player (or alternative bat/racquet), marker cones
How to play: Two pairs of players are on opposite sides of a square. A light weight ball is chipped/putted between the pairs. Each player attempts to land their shots in the middle of the square. (Play in groups of 4.)
Nominate one pair to start.
Ask players to chip or putt the ball into the target.
Pairs alternate with chipping or putting.
Players take a step back each time the ball stops in the target area.
Vary the type of club according to ability.
Activities 3 & 4 - Throlf
(Players remain at this station for 2 rotations)
Equipment: 1 Go Go Golf ball or other suitable ball per player, 1 7-iron or putter per player (or a bat or racquet), marker cones, variety of targets
How to play: As in golf, a course with holes is established. Players move around the course attempting to reach the target in the least number of hits.
Establish the course and spread the players out on it.
Players chip or putt from a start line (‘tee’) next to each target.
The next shot is taken from where their ball (or similar) lands.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Golf Draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Game - Beat the Bucket
Equipment: 3 tennis balls per game or alternative soft balls, 1 wedge or putter per game (or other lightweight hitting implement), Go Go Golf tees or marker cones
How to play: A base runner and up to 6 fielders. A base runner chips or putts 3 balls into the field and then attempts to run around 4 markers before fielders place all 3 balls in a bucket and call ‘STOP!’. (Play in groups of 6–10).
Base Runner chips or putts 3 tennis balls into the field.
Runs to first base as soon as the third ball is thrown and continues to the next base until a fielder calls ‘STOP!’
Fiedlers gather balls and throw them to one of the fielders on the bases.
Base-fielders run the ball to bucket in the centre of the diamond.
When all 3 balls have been returned to the bucket, a fielder calls ‘STOP!’ Fielders cannot move to start collecting the balls until the last ball has been hit.
