How to play
Ask students to decide who will be the 'leader' and who will be the 'follower'. On the teacher's first signal, the leader moves around the playing area while performing different movements, while the follower attempts to replicate the movement. On the teacher's second signal, students switch roles. Examples of movements could include, running, leaping, dodging, hopping, jumping, side galloping and skipping.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the size of the playing area.
Use equipment while moving around the playing area (e.g. bouncing a ball).
Skill development games
Activity 1 - Dribblers and robbers
Equipment: 4 balls per 5 students, Markers
How to play: Players (dribblers) with a ball move around the court dribbling. 1 or 2 players (robbers) attempt to intercept their balls — without making body contact. (Play in groups of 5.)
Dribblers
Try to maintain possession.
Dribblers must dribble the ball as they move around the court.
Robbers
Robbers try to win possession of a ball.
Dribblers who lose possession become robbers and try to gain possession of another dribbler’s ball – but not the ball they have just lost.
Activity 2 - Target relay
Equipment: Markers to define gates, basketball.
How to play: Gates are set up over a course. Players in relay teams dribble a ball around the course, passing between each gate. (Play with groups of 3 or 4.)
Walk and dribble the first time, run and dribble all other times.
Alternate the dribbling hand each time through the course.
Activity 3 - How many bean bags?
Equipment: 10–15 basketballs (or similar), cones
How to play: One player from each pair runs to a central point to collect one ball at a time and dribble the ball back to their team-mate at their base and then tag the next player.
Teams collect as many balls as possible in the allotted time (e.g. 60 seconds).
Players dribble the ball back to home base.
When all the balls have been removed from the centre, the coach calls ‘STOP!’
Activity 4 - Partner tag
Equipment: Basketballs
How to play: One player in each pair (the tagger) tries to tag their partner. Their partner uses different moves, such as leading and changing direction to avoid being tagged, while dribbling a ball.
The tagger counts to 5 to give the other player time to get away.
The player being tagged has to dribble a basketball.
When a person is tagged, roles swap – don’t forget the count to 5.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Basketball draw' as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
Scoring:
One point is scored for the running team if the runner reaches home before the fielders pass the ball and shoot a basket.
Game - Beat the ball
Equipment: Basketball, cones, basketball hoop
How to play: Form a running team (Team A) and a fielding team (Team B). One of the Team A players rolls a basketball into the court area and then dribbles a second ball around the bases. You call out a number between 1 and 5. Team B collects the ball and makes the number of passes called out. The last Team B player dribbles the ball to the basket and shoots.
A Team A player rolls the ball into the court and then dribbles another ball around the bases.
You call a number between 1 and 5. Team B must make this number of passes, and then successfully shoot a goal.
If Team B scores a basket before Team A gets home, the player is out.
Once 3 people are out, the teams swap.
