Gala day events
Fast start
Small-sided game
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Set-up playing area prior to the session.
Players participate in the small-sided game as a team.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Fast start - Bank, river, shore
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area) and 4 markers (to set out the river).
How to play:
All students must line up along the 'river'.
Explain to students that the marked line to left of the 'river' is the bank and the line to the right of the 'river' is the shore.
The teacher calls out either river, bank or shore.
Students must run to get to the corresponding destination as fast as possible.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the size of the playing area.
Vary the starting positions. (e.g. standing on one leg, crouching down).
Perform different actions when reaching the destination (e.g. hop onto the bank, tuck jump on the river).
Small sided game
Dodge the ball
Skill focus: Dodge
Equipment: Balls, cones to mark playing area
How to play: Players are divided into 2 teams separated by a ‘no-go’ barrier. The ball is rolled across the barrier. Students dodge to avoid being hit by the ball.
Use a basketball court or mark out an area with a centre line.
Students are divided into two teams and each team is given three balls.
When the whistle is blown, students roll the balls into the other team’s area trying to hit the other team below the knees.
Students should use the dodge to avoid the balls.
If students are hit by a ball they run around the outside of the area once and then move back onto the court.
Adapted from No-Go - Playing for Life Activity Card
Scoring: 1 point for each player hit by the ball.
