Fast start
Small-sided games
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Set-up playing area prior to the session..
Players participate in the games as a team.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Fast start - Bank, river, shore
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area) and 4 markers (to set out the river).
How to play:
All students must line up along the 'river'.
Explain to students that the marked line to left of the 'river' is the bank and the line to the right of the 'river' is the shore.
The teacher calls out either river, bank or shore.
Students must run to get to the corresponding destination as fast as possible.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the size of the playing area.
Vary the starting positions. (e.g. standing on one leg, crouching down).
Perform different actions when reaching the destination (e.g. hop onto the bank, tuck jump on the river).
Small sided games
Scoring
Teams score points when:
the ball touches the ground twice on the opponent’s side
the opponents send the ball out of court > the ball lands in the ‘no-go’ area from an opponent’s last touch.
Score to an agreed number of points (e.g. 10) or set a time limit (e.g. 5 minutes).
No - go
How to play: Players are divided into 2 teams separated by a ‘no-go’ barrier. The ball is thrown across the barrier. The opposing team must catch the ball and send it back.
Set up the playing area as shown. The ‘barrier’ between the 2 teams is the no-go area.
Divide the players into 2 teams.
The ball is thrown across the barrier above waist height.
The opposing team must catch the ball on the full or after one bounce and send it back.
Players must catch and throw in one movement.
Keep up the ball
Equipment: 16 marker cones to mark out a flat, square (15m x 15m) playing area for each team, 4 large balls, pencil and paper per team
How to play: A team of players try to keep a ball off the ground by passing it to each other.
Each team begins in their own playing area.
Teams count how many consecutive passes without the ball touching the ground they can do.
Team leader records number of consecutive passes.
The team with the most passes after 10 minutes wins.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What will you take away from the Net and court games that you can use for our next sport?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
