Week 4 - Netball
Skill focus: Shooting and rebounding
Session equipment
Netballs (many of the activities in the School Sport Netball program require every player to have a ball, therefore any round ball can be used to ensure maximum participation).
cones
hoops
bibs or sashes
goal posts (padded)
wall
chalk
Download the Netball - Week 4 activity card to support teaching before and during the sport session.
Fast start - Ready, set, go
Equipment: 8 markers to set up 25m x 25m playing area
How to play:
Students scatter in the playing area. On the teacher’s signal, they start running around in the space. Students are given the following instructions to respond to:
Red –freeze on the spot
Yellow – leap around the area
Green – run around the area
CHANGE IT!
Increase the complexity of the three movements. For example, jumping jacks, high plank, and balance on one leg.
Decrease the complexity of the three movements. (eg. balance on one leg, clap hands, do arm circles)
Students move in one direction only (e.g. clockwise/anti-clockwise).
Vary the locomotor movements.
Skill development games
Activity 1 - Pairs passing
Equipment: 1 netball per team, markers or tape to identify 2 lines about 3 metres apart, hoops
How to play: Players form pairs and, on agreed signal, practice shooting goals to each other for 30 seconds. At the end of 30 seconds, the player without the ball moves to form a new pair. Shooting starts again.
Pairs distribute themselves and wait for the signal ‘go’.
Pairs shoot goals to each other at their own rate for 30 seconds.
At the end of 30 seconds the player without the ball moves to find another player with a ball.
The activity is repeated.
Alternatively, use hoops as a target.
Activity 2 - Rebound ball
Equipment: 1 netball per team, wall
How to play: A player throws a ball (shooting action) at a wall and stands back for a second player to catch the ball – the activity continues this way. Play with 2 or 3.
Practise individually – allow individual practice
to build skill and confidence.
The first player throws the ball at the wall and moves quickly to the end of the team, allowing the second player to move up and catch the ball. Continue down the line.
Play against the clock (e.g. which team has given its players the highest number of turns in 40 seconds?)
Activity 3 - Bullseye
Equipment: 1 netball per player, wall, drawn target, cones for shot lines
How to play: Players in small groups shoot a ball to a wall target aiming to score maximum points.
Each player shoots the ball to the target area.
One shot per player before balls are retrieved.
Repeat for a given number of rounds, e.g. 5 shots for each player.
Set up 3 shot lines positioned at different distances and angles to the target.
Activity 4 - Shooting rounders
Equipment: 1 netball per game, goal ring
How to play: Players try to score points for their team by scoring a goal before the running team completes a circuit. Play in teams of 5 to 6.
Organise players into two even teams (5 to 6 players per team).
The shooting team stands in front of the goal ring (or alternatively a target on a wall or hoop held to the side by a player).
The running team starts at the sideline.
The first running team player throws the ball into the goal third and then runs around the outside of it.
The shooting team retrieves the ball and passes it to each team member until the ball reaches the player under the goal post who takes a shot.
If the player running completes a circuit first, they score a point.
The shooting team scores a point if they score a goal before the runner reaches home.
Repeat for each member of the running team.
Teams change roles after all of the running team has had their turn passing.
Modified small-sided games
It's time for competition!
Teams compete against each other in the game outlined below. You can use the 'Netball draw'as a guide to organise the competition, across the 4 sessions try to ensure each team has a fair number of games.
Allocate 3 points for a win, 2 points for a drawer and 1 point for a loss for each game played. Record results and points in the School sport program results spreadsheet.
Remember, to give students an update of the leader board each week.
End to end
Equipment: Padded goal posts at each end, netball per court, bibs for each team
How to play: Players from two opposing teams are paired off and spread the length of the court, taking up designated netball positions. On your signal, the player with the ball at one end passes the ball to a team-mate in the next zone. This continues until a goal is scored at the other end. The opposing team tries to intercept the ball. (Play with teams of 7 people.)
The court is divided into thirds, with goal circles at each end forming the goal zones.
Each team has 7 players on court in netball designated positions (see ‘Introduction’ for details).
Introduce Netta rules.
Scoring:
Teams score a point if they make a successful shot at goal from within the goal circle.
