Hockey gala day
Organisation
In the week prior to the gala day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala day.
Play on a smaller field, approximately 55 metres x 22.9 metres.
The field is divided into 3 zones — defence, midfield and forward — with goals at each end protected by a no-go area of 3 metres.
Games will be 2 x 15-minute halves with a 5-minute break.
Explain the organisation of the matches being played using the gala day draw below.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala day.
Give students 5 minutes to meet as a team to decide on starting positions and strategies for their first game.
Use results in ‘Hockey results spreadsheet' to determine the team who finishes the round games in 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd position and 4th position.
Student engagement
Semi-final 1 and Semi-final 2 should be played at the same time if teacher supervision allows.
The teams who were unsuccessful in their semi-final can play an additional game for third and fourth place.
Alternatively, students may take on spectator and officiating roles, such as:
time keeping
side line official
scoring
ground control
Rules and guidelines
Players are usually given a position based on four main groups — a goalkeeper, defenders, midfi elders or forwards
Players use a slightly lighter ball (approximately 110–115g).
Each team has 6 players on the field, with 2 in each zone. »
Players are limited to where they can move within the playing area.
Defenders are only allowed in the defensive zone.
Midfielders are allowed in all 3 zones.
Forwards are only allowed in the forward zone.
The ball cannot be passed over more than 2 zones.
Goals can only be scored from within the forward zone.
Players should rotate positions regularly.
Sticks must be on the ground at all times.
No body contact is allowed.
Players cannot stop or kick the ball with their feet.
No goalkeepers are used.
Players must be 3 stick lengths away from the ball at ‘free plays’.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What will you take away from Hockey that you can use for our next sport?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
