Curatorial Rationale

Sam Feuerlicht

I wanted to use my art to express isolation. This theme of isolation is not only recurring in my work as an artist but my life in general. In my own life, I think the best and achieve the most when I am alone. And I wanted to express how much isolation means to me in my work. To express this theme of isolation, I experimented with different mediums including photography and printmaking while also exploring experimenting my with the use of depth, perception, borders, and scale to fully represent my theme.

The works in my show use different mediums and scales specifically to show the different ways in which isolation can come across. For example, my Fisherman Print, which is significantly larger than most of my other pieces still portrays the theme but in different ways. The soft color, a color specifically chosen as one I particularly associate with isolation helps convey my theme to a different level as within my isolation one of my goals was to have a personal unseen aspect in each piece that only I would be aware of which emphasizes isolation. In addition to the isolation that I recognize, the viewer sees the fisherman alone, with nobody around and sees that very same theme, but in a different way than I see it. Similar to my series of nine photos, in each picture there is an isolation of a figure or object or something, but the isolation for me in each picture is different, whether it’s what I was feeling when I took the pictures or where I was or other reasons.

For my exhibition I am going to display my work in two main sections, a sports section and a nature section. This combines the two areas of art I am most fond of while also tying them both together using the theme of isolation. Having a mix of scale is going to make it difficult to create a similar level of significance among the pieces, as none I feel are any more or less significant, but this is something I will work through by experimenting with different layouts for my show.
