Grandma’s House

Colored Pencil, Foam Core, Tacky Glue, Artificial grass, glossy photo paper, 2’ by 2 ¾’, 5/2/19-3/10/20

I wanted to experiment with how to depict people, memories and events through a 3-dimensional structure. I love architecture and I wanted to practice model making. However, my focus wasn’t just about creating a structurally stable piece, but being able to transmit the theme of intimacy in the stylistic elements and details I implemented. For my piece, I used a foam core board for the actual structure, but I was able to create a little furniture piece to recreate the kitchen and the dining room. In addition, I was able to find something similar to the tiles on the floor, so I printed it onto a glossy photo paper which adds a different texture component. This personal touch is also evident in my decision to add my grandmother’s curtain and tablecloth. Each element is fundamental in the recreation of the space because for me, it helps to rebirth, those moments that I can’t have in that space anymore because the home was demolished. However, it sparks the good memories I experienced like playing dominoes with my family, cooking together and even just sitting in the balcony as the afternoon breeze hit my face. Lastly, I intend for this piece to be a way that the audience could have a sense of how the space looked like and maybe remember their intimate or familial spaces that they may or may not have access to.
