Curatorial Rationale

Finn Stubbs

My exhibition depicts a variety of different landscapes all on a similar theme of my appreciation of nature and my emotions in those landscapes. Landscapes create feelings of serenity, and peacefulness, as well as vulnerability, and these are themes I try to dictate in each of my works. However, in each piece or groups of pieces I attempted to outline and display a different theme. In my sketches using graphite and pencil I experimented with how different line density and different shading techniques would manipulate the shadows, foreground and background of each piece. With this show I initially intended to convey my feelings for landscapes, but it converged into how I see landscapes; both how I experienced them in person and how I somewhat idolize and appreciate the massive scale and impact these landscapes have on the natural world. In my exploration of the materials I initially thought the best way to express this appreciation would be through acrylic painting, as I felt it provided the texture and color that was instrumental in my depictions. While I did use some color in my pieces, the main body of each piece either stemmed or was created using pencils and detailed sketching. Using pencil and graphite in my work gave me more control, and allowed me to create details that I wasn’t able to curate using paints, as I had less control. Claude Monet was one of the major influencers in my work, because of the fluidity he creates in his work. His different paintings showed nature and landscapes in many different forms of light and locations. His repetition was a result of his deep fascination with the effects of light. Within my exploration and experimentation in my creation of different types of landscapes and depictions, I was concerned about the piece’s detail and within that detail the color and light of the canvas. Depicting light in the right way brings out even more details, something I had been working on the pieces present in the show. I have arranged my show with light pieces contrasted with dark ones on the wall, using the

space I had to create a sense of multiple levels on the wall. I want my audience to understand my appreciation for landscapes and nature, but I also want them to create their own sense of appreciation after seeing the show.
