DUMSTER DIVER

Acrylic on canvas, 50.8 x 50.8 cm, September 2019

My initial idea for this piece was to make a painting of a wave breaking on the beach in front of a sunset. However, this idea seemed far too cliché and not in line with any of the themes in my other pieces. Therefore, instead of simply making a piece based on what one would typically see, I wanted this piece to be able to surprise the viewer, specifically by incorporating subject matter and themes that would be typically seen as unusual or against the norm. After thinking over the weekend about how this would be accomplished, the image eventually came to me. I decided to combine two scenes that would rarely, or almost never, be seen together, but yet had a connection to me and my experience: a wave breaking in front of a building. The building in the background is based off of Trellick Tower in London, which is a building my father always points out to me whenever we are driving around.
