The purpose of this piece is to honor the special relationship I have with my horse. Being very important to me, I wanted him to be the only thing within the composition so that all attention was on him, hence the black background. Having only his ‘bust’ mimics the style of the human portraits often used for royalty or important figures. I used only black and white because he is both gray in real life and I wanted to experiment with chiaroscuro to see how it could create a dramatic tone.
