Mixed media on wood 12” x 12” February 2020

Through this piece, I have explored the use of mixed media as a way to present the purpose and themes behind the work. This piece represents my great grandparents and the long, rich love that they shared. The purpose of this piece is to take a symbolism, subject matter and have it represent the themes and messages emerging. The photographed flowers in the piece represent the roses that my great grandfather gave my great grandmother every anniversary. Additionally, the “I love you” written in Italian represents their heritage. I decided to present the subject matter on wood as this gave a substantial and pure feel. The choice to have whitewash painted over the photograph came from, the purpose to show that these were emerging memories. I wanted to create the effect of important memories while also showing that an object may symbolize a great deal of importance.
