But I Baked You a Cake

Photograph 33 cm x 48 cm February 2020

I have explored the experience of domesticity. I chose to photograph a cake because baking is central to domesticity. I decorated the cake pink, a color which is associated with femininity. In three photographs, the cake becomes gradually destroyed. I hoped in this piece to invoke disappointment; the cake represents a carefully constructed offering and an effort to conform to a domestic role, and its destruction represents its failure.
