Serenity

Mixed media on wood 6” x 8” May 2019

This piece represents strength, perseverance, and willingness. Each subject matter represents something different that is significant to me. One of the wood pieces has Nantucket island on it. It represents the family value that this place holds. I have been going to this place, with my family, for 18 years now. It is where I learned to swim, learned the importance of family, and discovered parts of myself. I cherish the memories that I have made here and value that it holds. The next piece is the coordinates of Madison Square Garden. This arena is the place where I went to my first concert and sports game with my parents. This place holds great memories that I will remember forever. The last piece has three birds flying on it. This represents how you can break free and fly away from your worries and the toxic situations around you. To exhibit the themes and messages that I wanted to convey through my work I took into consideration the formal qualities of the piece. I chose to have the subject matter be black and white silhouettes to show how the importance of the piece wasn’t the details or color that it was the figure itself. Additionally, I chose to have the surface be natural wood as this gives nature a substantial feel.
