Arch

Ink on paper, 16 x 12, December 2018

The arch was one of my first Ink pieces. It’s based on a photo I took of the arch in grand army plaza at the entrance to prospect park. My mission was to capture the effect of light on 3D surfaces. I was fascinated by the shifting layers and intensities of light and I wanted to try to portray that relationship. I didn’t think color was necessary because I was really just focused on tone and shadow. I picked just a corner of the arch, rather than the whole thing, so I could zoom in on a specific part and maintain a higher level of detail.
