Eyes and Object

Collage on wood, 31x30, June 2019

As the #MeToo movement reached its height, I thought it was important for me to reflect on the hazards of the male gaze. I took an image of a man staring intensely and juxtaposed it with an image of a girl layered on top of a close up of a woman’s face. Because the man is looking at the viewer––not the woman and girl below him––the objectification is only implied. Still, the collage’s tension is evident, demonstrating how relentless the expectation of objectification is.
