Wooden box, printer paper, printing ink 3 ½” x 6 ½” December 2019

This piece represents the strength and perseverance that one can hold within themselves. When creating this body of work I used my determination of overcoming past struggles as well as my mother’s battle with alcoholism as the inspiration for my body of work. I wanted this piece to be a way for the viewer to embody the empowered emotions that I felt when reading the passages in the paper. The initial inspiration for this sculpture was based on a box that my mother’s friend has made for her after she returned from rehab. The purpose of the box was when my mother was feeling down or upset about something in life she would pick a random piece of paper out of the box, read it, put it back, and use the message as her inspiration for the day. When I created my own version of this. I wanted to use a natural wooden box because the wood gives a substantial feel. This artwork was made to be an interactive sculpture that the viewer would use to lift their spirits on a day that they didn’t feel their best. When finding the messages to use in the piece I used quotes that I had followed or that had been told to me by the loved ones around me. I took all the quotes and picked out the ones that were the most inspiring and notable to me. This gave a personal touch to the piece.
